Introduction

Welcome to The Flood & Cosmology study. This workbook examines how the biblical cosmology model—firmament, waters above, foundations—perfectly explains the worldwide Flood.

The Flood was not just rain. It was a cataclysmic restructuring of creation involving:

Understanding biblical cosmology is ESSENTIAL to understanding the Flood. Without the firmament and the waters above it, the Flood account makes no sense.

LESSON 1: THE PRE-FLOOD WORLD STRUCTURE

Before the Flood, the world had a specific structure described in Genesis 1.

Review: Genesis 1 Structure

Day 2: Yahuah created the to divide the waters.

The firmament divided:

The firmament was called .

This means there were WATERS ABOVE the firmament—a massive reservoir above the sky.

Genesis 1:6-7
"And Elohim said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And Elohim made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so."

The waters ABOVE the firmament still existed before the Flood. Where did they go?

Answer: They came DOWN during the Flood.

2 Peter 3:5-6
"For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished."

The heavens were of .

The earth was standing out of the and in the water.

The world that then was, being overflowed with , perished.

The Pre-Flood Canopy Theory

Many scholars believe the "waters above" formed a canopy around the earth, creating:

Genesis 2:5-6
"...for the Lord Elohim had not caused it to rain upon the earth... But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground."

Before the Flood, Yahuah had not caused it to .

A watered the earth.

Multiple Choice

1. What divided the waters above from the waters below?

○ A) Mountains   ○ B) The firmament   ○ C) The clouds   ○ D) Nothing

2. According to 2 Peter 3:5-6, what happened to the pre-Flood world?

○ A) It evolved   ○ B) It was preserved   ○ C) It perished by water   ○ D) It continued unchanged

3. How was the earth watered before the Flood (Genesis 2:5-6)?

○ A) Rain   ○ B) A mist from the earth   ○ C) Irrigation   ○ D) Rivers only

True or False

1. There were waters above the firmament before the Flood.
○ True ○ False

2. It rained regularly before the Flood according to Genesis 2.

LESSON 2: THE FOUNTAINS OF THE GREAT DEEP

The Flood began with the "fountains of the great deep" breaking open.

Genesis 7:11
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

The fountains of the great were broken up.

The of heaven were opened.

Notice the order:

  1. FIRST: Fountains of the deep broken up (water from below)
  2. SECOND: Windows of heaven opened (water from above)

Hebrew Word Study: "Broken Up"

The word "broken up" is "baqa" (Strong's #1234), meaning:

This was a violent, catastrophic event—not gentle rain.

What Is the "Great Deep"?

Genesis 1:2
"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep."

The "deep" (Hebrew: tehom) existed before Day 1. It refers to the vast waters below the earth.

Job 38:16
"Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?"

Yahuah asks Job if he has entered the of the sea.

Or walked in the of the depth.

Proverbs 8:28
"When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep."

Yahuah the fountains of the deep.

These fountains were "strengthened" or restrained—until the Flood, when they were released.

The Mechanics: What Happened?

The earth's crust BROKE OPEN. Massive amounts of water erupted from underground reservoirs with incredible force. This explains:

Multiple Choice

1. What does the Hebrew word "baqa" (broken up) mean?

○ A) Gentle opening   ○ B) To split, rip open, burst forth   ○ C) To close   ○ D) To drip slowly

2. What happened FIRST according to Genesis 7:11?

○ A) Windows of heaven opened   ○ B) Fountains of the deep broken up   ○ C) Rain fell   ○ D) Noah entered the ark

3. What are the "fountains of the great deep"?

○ A) Ocean waves   ○ B) Subterranean water reservoirs   ○ C) Rivers   ○ D) Clouds

True or False

1. The Flood was a gentle rain, not a violent catastrophe.
○ True ○ False

2. The "great deep" (tehom) existed before Day 1 of creation.
○ True ○ False

LESSON 3: THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN OPENED

The second source of Flood waters: the windows of heaven.

From Genesis 7:11: The of were opened.

Hebrew Word Study: "Windows"

The word "windows" is "arubbah" (Strong's #699), meaning:

These are literal openings in the firmament through which the waters above poured down.

Review: The Waters Above

From Genesis 1:7, we know there are waters the firmament.

When the windows opened, these waters to the earth.

Genesis 7:12
"And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights."

The was upon the earth forty days and nights.

This was the first rain in history—the release of the waters above the firmament.

Genesis 8:2
"The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained."

The fountains of the deep were .

The windows of heaven were .

The rain was .

Why "Windows" Not Just "Rain"?

The term "windows" implies structure—openings in the solid firmament. You cannot "open" or "close" empty space.

This confirms the firmament is a real, solid structure with openings that can be opened and shut.

Multiple Choice

1. What does "arubbah" (windows) mean?

○ A) Empty space   ○ B) Lattice, window, floodgate   ○ C) Clouds   ○ D) Mist

2. How long did the rain fall?

○ True ○ False

2. It had rained many times before the Flood.
○ True ○ False

3. Yahuah stopped the fountains and windows after 40 days.

LESSON 4: THE EXTENT OF THE FLOOD

The Flood was global, not local. Scripture makes this abundantly clear.

Genesis 7:19-20
"And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered."

the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.

The mountains were .

The waters rose at least cubits (22+ feet) above the highest mountains.

Genesis 7:21-23
"And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast... and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died... and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark."

flesh died that moved upon the earth.

All in whose nostrils was the breath of life .

Every living substance was from the earth.

The Flood permanently changed the structure of the earth.

Change 1: The Waters Above Were Depleted

Before: Waters above the firmament (Genesis 1:7)

After: Most (or all) of those waters fell to earth, resulting in:

Genesis 9:13
"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth."

Yahuah set His in the cloud.

This was the first (because there had been no rain before the Flood).

Change 2: Mountains Rose, Valleys Sank

Psalm 104:6-8
"Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled... They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them."

LESSON 7: EVIDENCE OF THE GLOBAL FLOOD

The Flood left unmistakable evidence across the earth.

Evidence 1: Sedimentary Rock Layers

Sedimentary rock covers over 75% of the earth's surface. These layers extend across continents, contain billions of fossils, and show rapid burial.

This matches a Flood, not millions of years.

Evidence 2: Fossils

Fossils require rapid burial. The Flood explains:

Evidence 3: Coal and Oil Deposits

Coal and oil form from buried organic matter. The Flood buried vast forests and organisms.

These deposits are found , consistent with a global catastrophe.

Evidence 4: Polystrate Fossils

Polystrate fossils extend through multiple rock layers. If each layer took thousands of years, the tree would decay.

Instead, the layers formed during the Flood.

Evidence 5: Canyon Formation

The Grand Canyon shows rapid water erosion. Similar formations have formed in or years—not millions of years.

Evidence 6: Flood Legends

Over 200 cultures worldwide have flood legends involving a global flood, a family saved in a boat, and animals brought aboard.

Why? Because they all descended from Noah's family.
