ABOUT THIS WORKBOOK

Genesis 7:11
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

The Flood was not merely 40 days of rain. It was a cataclysmic restructuring of creation involving the fountains of the great deep breaking open, the windows of heaven opening, and waters from above and below destroying the pre-Flood world. Understanding biblical cosmology is essential to understanding the Flood—without the firmament and the waters above it, the Flood account makes no sense.

Key Hebrew Word Studies

Raqia (רָקִיעַ) - Firmament

Strong's: H7549

Root: Raqa (H7554) - to stamp, beat, spread out (as in hammering metal)

Used in: Genesis 1:6-8, 14-17, 20; Psalm 19:1; Ezekiel 1:22-26

Meaning: A solid, stretched-out expanse separating waters above from waters below. The firmament is the dome-like structure holding back the waters above.

רָקִיעַ

Tehom (תְּהוֹם) - The Deep

Strong's: H8415

Used in: Genesis 1:2, 7:11, 8:2; Psalm 104:6; Proverbs 8:28

Meaning: The primordial deep, the vast waters below the earth. These subterranean reservoirs were the source of the "fountains of the great deep."

תְּהוֹם

Baqa (בָּקַע) - Broken Up

Strong's: H1234

Used in: Genesis 7:11

Meaning: To split, break open, burst forth violently, rip apart, breach. This describes a catastrophic, violent event—not gentle rain. The earth's crust literally broke open.

בָּקַע

Arubbah (אֲרֻבָּה) - Windows/Floodgates

Strong's: H699

Used in: Genesis 7:11, 8:2; 2 Kings 7:2, 19; Isaiah 24:18; Malachi 3:10

Meaning: Lattice, window, opening, sluice, floodgate. These are literal openings in the solid firmament through which the waters above poured down.

אֲרֻבָּה

Mabbul (מַבּוּל) - The Flood

Strong's: H3999

Used in: Genesis 6:17, 7:6-7, 9:11, 28; Psalm 29:10

Meaning: The deluge, the catastrophic flood. Used ONLY for Noah's Flood in Scripture, never for ordinary floods. This word is unique to this singular cataclysmic event.

מַבּוּל

Nephilim (נְפִילִים) - Giants/Fallen Ones

Strong's: H5303

Root: Naphal (H5307) - to fall

Used in: Genesis 6:4; Numbers 13:33

Meaning: The fallen ones, giants. The hybrid offspring of the "sons of Elohim" (fallen angels) and human women. Their existence was a primary reason for the Flood.

Evidence for Global Flood

Sedimentary Rock

Over 75% of Earth's surface is covered in sedimentary rock (water-deposited layers).

Layers extend across entire continents with billions of fossils.

Marine Fossils

Marine fossils found on every mountain range, including Mt. Everest.

Clams in "closed" position indicate rapid burial, not slow death.

Polystrate Fossils

Tree trunks extend through multiple rock layers (supposedly millions of years).

Proves layers formed rapidly—trees would decay otherwise.

Soft Tissue in Dinosaurs

Blood vessels, proteins found in "65 million year old" fossils.

Impossible if truly millions of years old—confirms young age.

Global Flood Legends

200+ cultures worldwide have flood legends with common elements:

Global flood, family saved in boat, animals, rainbow/sign after.

Coal & Oil Deposits

Require massive burial of organic material under pressure.

Found worldwide, consistent with global catastrophe.

Quick Facts: Cosmology and the Flood

Order of Events (Genesis 7:11)

FIRST: Fountains of the deep broken up

SECOND: Windows of heaven opened

Water from BELOW preceded water from ABOVE.

Water Volume

15 cubits (~22+ feet) ABOVE the highest mountains

Covered "all the high hills under the whole heaven"

Source: Waters above firmament + subterranean deep

Why "Windows" Matters

You cannot "open" or "close" empty space.

"Windows of heaven" implies solid structure (firmament) with openings.

Confirms literal waters above literal firmament.

LESSON 1: The Pre-Flood World Structure

Before we can understand the Flood, we must understand the structure of creation that existed BEFORE the Flood. Genesis 1 describes a world very different from today.

Day 2: The Firmament Divides the Waters

Genesis 1:6-7
"And Elohim said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And Elohim made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so."

The firmament (Hebrew: raqia) was created to DIVIDE waters. This means there were:

The firmament was called "Heaven" (Genesis 1:8). The sun, moon, and stars are placed IN the firmament (Genesis 1:14-17). And above the firmament—beyond the visible sky—were waters.

Critical Understanding: The waters above the firmament still existed before the Flood. Where did they go? They came DOWN during the Flood when the "windows of heaven" were opened.

2 Peter's Description of the Pre-Flood World

2 Peter 3:5-6
"For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished."

Peter describes the pre-Flood world as surrounded by water—above (waters above the firmament) and below (the great deep). When these waters were released, the world "that then was" perished completely.

The Pre-Flood Canopy

Many scholars believe the "waters above" formed a canopy around the earth, creating:

Genesis 2:5-6
"For Yahuah Elohim had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground."

Before the Flood, Yahuah had NOT caused rain. A mist watered the earth. The first rain in history came during the Flood when the waters above the firmament were released.

LESSON 2: The Fountains of the Great Deep

The Flood began with the "fountains of the great deep" breaking open—a catastrophic event that released massive amounts of subterranean water.

Genesis 7:11
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

The Order of Events

Notice the precise order in Genesis 7:11:

  1. FIRST: The fountains of the great deep broken up (water from BELOW)
  2. SECOND: The windows of heaven opened (water from ABOVE)

The subterranean waters erupted FIRST, followed by the release of the waters above the firmament.

Hebrew Word Study: "Broken Up"

The Hebrew word for "broken up" is baqa (Strong's H1234), meaning:

This was NOT gentle rain! The word baqa describes a violent, catastrophic event. The earth's crust literally BROKE OPEN, releasing massive amounts of water with incredible force.

What Is the "Great Deep"?

Genesis 1:2
"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Elohim moved upon the face of the waters."

The "deep" (Hebrew: tehom) existed before Day 1. It refers to the vast primordial waters, including subterranean reservoirs beneath the earth's surface.

Job 38:16
"Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?"

Yahuah asks Job about the "springs of the sea"—underground water sources connected to the great deep.

Proverbs 8:28
"When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep."

Yahuah "strengthened" (restrained) the fountains of the deep at creation. They were held back until the judgment of the Flood, when they were released.

The Mechanics: What Happened?

The earth's crust broke open. Massive amounts of water erupted from underground reservoirs with incredible force—like geysers or volcanoes of water, but on a global scale. This explains:

LESSON 3: The Windows of Heaven Opened

The second source of Flood waters came from above—through the "windows of heaven."

Genesis 7:11
"...the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

Hebrew Word Study: "Windows"

The Hebrew word for "windows" is arubbah (Strong's H699), meaning:

Key Insight: These are literal openings in the firmament through which the waters above poured down. You cannot "open" or "close" empty space—the term "windows" implies a solid structure with openings that can be opened and shut.

The Waters Above Released

From Genesis 1:7, we know there are waters ABOVE the firmament. When the "windows" opened, these waters fell to earth.

Genesis 7:12
"And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights."

This was the first rain in history—the release of the waters above the firmament. Before this, a mist had watered the earth (Genesis 2:5-6).

The Windows Closed

Genesis 8:2
"The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained."

After 40 days, Yahuah:

The waters from above were depleted—most or all had fallen to earth. This is why the post-Flood world has rain cycles (clouds form from evaporation) rather than a water canopy above the firmament.

Why "Windows" Matters for Cosmology

The term "windows of heaven" confirms biblical cosmology:

This is inconsistent with the modern globe/space model but perfectly consistent with the biblical model of a dome-like firmament holding back waters above.

LESSON 4: The Global Extent of the Flood

Scripture is abundantly clear: the Flood was GLOBAL, not local. Every attempt to make it a local flood contradicts the plain text of Scripture.

All the High Hills Covered

Genesis 7:19-20
"And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered."

Key phrases:

All Flesh Destroyed

Genesis 7:21-23
"And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark."

Complete destruction:

No survivors outside the ark. If the Flood were local, people and animals could have walked to safety. The fact that ONLY those on the ark survived proves the Flood was global.

Peter's Confirmation

2 Peter 3:6
"Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished."

Peter says "the WORLD that then was" perished. Not a region. Not a valley. THE WORLD.

Why a Global Flood?

LESSON 5: The Duration of the Flood

The Flood was NOT a 40-day event. The earth was covered for over a YEAR. Understanding the timeline shows the magnitude of this cataclysm.

The Timeline

Genesis 7:11
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month... the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

Flood began: Noah's 600th year, 2nd month, 17th day

Genesis 7:24
"And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days."

Waters prevailed: 150 days

Genesis 8:3-4
"And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat."

Ark rested: 7th month, 17th day (5 months after start)

Genesis 8:13-14
"And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry. And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried."

Earth fully dried: Noah's 601st year, 2nd month, 27th day

LESSON 6: Post-Flood Cosmological Changes

The Flood permanently changed the structure of the earth and its cosmology. The pre-Flood world was dramatically different from what we see today.

Change 1: The Waters Above Were Depleted

Before: Waters above the firmament (Genesis 1:7)

After: Most or all of those waters fell to earth during the Flood

This explains:

Change 2: The First Rainbow

Genesis 9:13-14
"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud."

Yahuah set His bow (rainbow) in the cloud as a covenant sign. This was the first rainbow because:

Change 3: Mountains Rose, Valleys Sank

Psalm 104:6-8
"Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them."

This Psalm describes the post-Flood restructuring:

The pre-Flood terrain was likely gentler. The massive mountain ranges and deep ocean trenches we see today formed during and after the Flood.

Change 4: Continents Separated (Possibly)

Genesis 10:25
"And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan."

Some interpret "the earth was divided" as continental separation. Others see it as the division of peoples at Babel. Either way, the post-Flood world experienced major geographic changes.

Change 5: Permission to Eat Meat

Genesis 9:3
"Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things."

Before the Flood: Mankind was vegetarian (Genesis 1:29)

After the Flood: Yahuah permitted eating meat

The post-Flood world required different provisions—the changed environment could not support the pre-Flood vegetarian diet as easily.

Multiple Choice:

2. According to Psalm 104:6-8, what happened to the terrain after the Flood?

LESSON 7: Evidence of the Global Flood

The Flood left unmistakable evidence across the earth. When viewed through the lens of catastrophism rather than uniformitarianism, the geological record confirms the biblical account.

Evidence 1: Sedimentary Rock Layers

The Evidence: Sedimentary rock (formed by water depositing layers of sediment) covers over 75% of the earth's surface.

These layers: This matches a GLOBAL Flood, not millions of years of slow processes.

Evidence 2: Fossils Require Rapid Burial

Fossils require rapid burial to form. Slow decay does not produce fossils—organisms decompose completely unless buried quickly.

The Flood explains:

Evidence 3: Polystrate Fossils

Polystrate fossils (like tree trunks) extend through multiple rock layers, sometimes spanning 20+ feet of sediment.

The Problem: If each layer took thousands of years to form, the tree would completely decay.
The Solution: The layers formed RAPIDLY during the Flood, burying the tree quickly.

Evidence 4: Coal and Oil Deposits

Coal and oil form from buried organic matter under pressure. The Flood buried:

These deposits are found on every continent, consistent with a global catastrophe—not local events.

Evidence 5: Grand Canyon and Rapid Erosion

The Grand Canyon shows evidence of rapid water erosion, not slow processes over millions of years. Similar canyon formations have been observed forming in days or weeks after volcanic eruptions or dam breaks.

Evidence 6: Global Flood Legends

Over 200 cultures worldwide have flood legends involving:
Why? Because they all descended from Noah's family and remember the event.

LESSON 8: The Nephilim and the Flood

One major (and often overlooked) reason for the Flood: the Nephilim. Understanding Genesis 6:1-4 is critical to understanding WHY the Flood was necessary.

The Sons of Elohim and Daughters of Men

Genesis 6:1-4
"And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And Yahuah said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of Elohim came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."

Who Were the "Sons of Elohim"?

The phrase "sons of Elohim" (bene Elohim) in the Hebrew Old Testament refers to angelic beings:

These were fallen angels who left their proper domain (Jude 1:6) and took human wives, producing hybrid offspring.

The Nephilim: Hybrid Giants

The Hebrew word for "giants" is Nephilim (Strong's H5303), from the root "naphal" meaning "to fall."

Genetic Corruption: The Nephilim corrupted the human bloodline. If left unchecked, the promised "seed of the woman" (Genesis 3:15)—the Messiah—could not come through a pure human line.

The Wickedness of Mankind

Genesis 6:5
"And Yahuah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."

The corruption was total—genetic, moral, and spiritual. "EVERY imagination" was "ONLY evil CONTINUALLY."

Noah's Purity

Genesis 6:9
"These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with Elohim."

Noah was "perfect in his generations" (Hebrew: tamim). This word can mean:

Noah's bloodline was NOT corrupted by the Nephilim. He was the only genetically pure line remaining.

LESSON 9: Yahuah's Covenant After the Flood

After the Flood, Yahuah made a covenant with Noah—a binding promise that still applies today.

Yahuah's Promise

Genesis 8:21-22
"And Yahuah smelled a sweet savour; and Yahuah said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

Yahuah promised:

The Covenant Established

Genesis 9:11-13
"And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And Elohim said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth."

Key elements of the covenant:

LESSON 10: The Next Judgment - By Fire

The Flood was the FIRST global judgment. But Scripture is clear: there will be another—this time by FIRE.

The World That Was vs. The World That Is

2 Peter 3:5-7
"For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."

Peter makes a comparison:

The Day of Yahuah

2 Peter 3:10
"But the day of Yahuah will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

What will happen:

The Parallel to Noah's Day

Matthew 24:37-39
"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

Just as the Flood came suddenly upon an unsuspecting world, so will the final judgment. People will be going about their daily lives—then judgment will come.

Are You Ready?

The Question: Just as Noah found refuge in the ark, we must find refuge in Yahusha the Messiah—the TRUE Ark of salvation.

Will you be found IN the Ark when judgment comes?
2 Peter 3:11-13
"Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of Elohim, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."

The promise: New heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells. The fire is not the end—it is purification for the new creation.
