What the Bible Actually Says About the Nephilim
TRUTH CARRIERS EDUCATION SYSTEM
Supernatural/End Times Series - Teen & Adult Level
This workbook examines what Scripture teaches about giants (Nephilim, Anakim, Rephaim) and explores historical evidence. Our approach prioritizes biblical text over speculation, distinguishing documented Scripture from disputed archaeological claims.
Core Thesis: Scripture clearly teaches giants existed. The spiritual lesson—that Yahuah defeats the enemies of His people—matters more than proving archaeological claims.
What You Will Learn:
Audience: Teens (14+) and Adults
Study Time: 8 lessons, approximately 45-60 minutes each
This workbook uses the 6Rs Learning Method to help you truly master the material, not just read through it:
Why This Works: Research shows we remember only 10% of what we read, but up to 90% of what we teach to others. The 6Rs method transforms passive reading into active learning that sticks!
| Term | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| נְפִילִים (Nephilim) | neh-fee-LEEM | "Fallen ones" - from root "naphal" (to fall) |
| גִּבּוֹר (Gibbor) | gib-BOR | "Mighty one" - warrior, hero |
| רְפָאִים (Rephaim) | reh-fah-EEM | Ancient giant race, also means "shades" (dead) |
| עֲנָקִים (Anakim) | ah-nah-KEEM | "Long-necked ones" - giant clan from Anak |
| בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים (Bene ha-Elohim) | beh-NAY hah-eh-lo-HEEM | "Sons of God" - heavenly beings |
| Group | Location | Scripture | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nephilim | Pre-Flood Earth | Genesis 6:4 | "Mighty men of old, men of renown" |
| Anakim | Canaan (Hebron) | Numbers 13:33 | Descendants of Anak; terrified the spies |
| Rephaim | East of Jordan | Deuteronomy 3:11 | Ancient tall race; Og was last king |
| Emim | Moab | Deuteronomy 2:10-11 | "Like the Anakim" - feared by Moabites |
| Zamzummim | Ammon | Deuteronomy 2:20 | Also called Zuzim (Genesis 14:5) |
| Philistine Giants | Gaza, Gath, Ashdod | 2 Samuel 21 | Goliath and his brothers |
The Hebrew word נְפִילִים (Nephilim) comes from the root "naphal" meaning "to fall." This gives us two possible meanings:
The word implies powerful warriors or giants who dominated early humanity.
| View | "Sons of Elohim" = | Proponents |
|---|---|---|
| Fallen Angel View | Angels who left their proper domain and mated with humans | Book of Enoch, Justin Martyr, Josephus, early Jewish sources |
| Sethite View | Godly descendants of Seth marrying ungodly Cainite women | Augustine, many modern evangelicals |
| Ruler/Tyrant View | Powerful kings/elites claiming divine status | Some modern scholars |
Scripture says the Nephilim were on earth "in those days—and also afterward." This indicates giants existed both before AND after the Flood. Numbers 13:33 confirms this, using the same Hebrew word "Nephilim" to describe the giants in Canaan.
Check the box if the statement is TRUE. Leave unchecked if FALSE.
1. Which interpretation of "sons of Elohim" makes the most sense of the text? Why?
2. Why does Scripture call them "heroes of old, men of renown"? What does this tell us about their reputation?
3. What does "also afterward" tell us about giants appearing post-Flood?
Genesis 6:4 - "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of Elohim went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown."
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of Elohim went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown."

Significantly, Numbers 13:33 uses the exact same Hebrew word נְפִילִים (Nephilim) as Genesis 6:4. This confirms the phrase "also afterward" in Genesis - giants existed after the Flood.
Ten of the twelve spies brought back a "bad report" because of fear:
Note: Goliath was from Gath - one of the cities where Anakim survived!
1. Why did the ten spies focus on the giants instead of Yahuah's promises? What can we learn from this?
2. What was the difference between the perspective of the ten spies versus Caleb and Joshua?
Numbers 14:9 - "Do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but Yahuah is with us. Do not be afraid of them."
"Do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but Yahuah is with us. Do not be afraid of them."

Scripture describes multiple giant groups in and around Canaan:
| Group | Location | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Anakim | Canaan (Hebron area) | Descendants of Anak; terrified the Israelite spies |
| Rephaim | East of Jordan (Bashan) | Ancient tall race; Og was their last king |
| Emim | Moab | "Like the Anakim" - feared by Moabites |
| Zamzummim | Ammon | Also called Zuzim; destroyed by Yahuah |
| Amorites | Throughout Canaan | Described as tall as cedars (Amos 2:9) |
| Measurement | Biblical (Cubits) | Modern (18" cubit) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 9 cubits | ~13.5 feet (4.1 meters) |
| Width | 4 cubits | ~6 feet (1.8 meters) |
Og is described as "the last of the remnant of the Rephaim." His iron bed was apparently kept as a trophy in Rabbah, demonstrating its historical reality to ancient readers.
While poetic, this description indicates the Amorites were known for extraordinary stature.
1. Why do you think Scripture provides the exact dimensions of Og's bed? What does this detail tell us?
2. What is the significance of Og being called "the last of the remnant of the Rephaim"?
Deuteronomy 3:11 - "For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim."
"For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it."

| Source | Measurement | Modern Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Hebrew (Masoretic Text) | 6 cubits and a span | ~9 feet 9 inches (2.97 m) |
| Greek (Septuagint) | 4 cubits and a span | ~6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m) |
Note: Manuscript variation exists. Either way, Goliath was extraordinarily large.
| Item | Biblical Weight | Modern Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Coat of mail | 5,000 shekels | ~125 pounds (57 kg) |
| Spear point | 600 shekels | ~15 pounds (6.8 kg) |
| Spear shaft | "Like a weaver's beam" | Very thick and heavy |
Scripture records four additional giants killed by David's mighty men:
The giant with 24 fingers and toes (6 on each extremity) suggests a genetic condition called polydactyly. This appears to have been hereditary in this giant family, possibly indicating a distinct genetic lineage.
1. What made David different from the rest of Israel's army in facing Goliath?
2. David said "the battle is Yahuah's." How does this apply to the "giants" we face today?
1 Samuel 17:47 - "All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that Yahuah saves; for the battle is Yahuah's."
"All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that Yahuah saves; for the battle is Yahuah's, and He will give all of you into our hands."

The Book of Enoch is NOT part of the biblical canon accepted by most Christians and Jews. We study it for historical context, not as inspired Scripture. Build doctrine on the Bible, not on extra-biblical books.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Jewish apocalyptic literature |
| Date Written | 300-100 BCE (scholarly consensus) |
| Found | Among the Dead Sea Scrolls (Aramaic fragments) |
| Canon Status | Included in Ethiopian Orthodox Bible; rejected by most others |
The Book of Enoch describes:
This passage directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9.
This echoes the "Watcher" imprisonment concept in Enoch.
1. Why do you think the early church did not include Enoch in the biblical canon?
2. How should we approach extra-biblical sources - completely reject them or use them carefully?
2 Timothy 3:16 - "All Scripture is breathed out by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."
"All Scripture is breathed out by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."

Giant legends appear in nearly ALL cultures worldwide. This is remarkable when we consider that many of these cultures developed independently, with no known contact with each other or with Hebrew tradition.
| Culture | Giant Legend | Key Details |
|---|---|---|
| Greek/Roman | Titans & Cyclopes | Giants who warred against the gods; one-eyed giants |
| Native American (Paiute) | Si-Te-Cah | Red-haired cannibal giants; Lovelock Cave legend |
| Mesopotamian | Gilgamesh & Humbaba | Gilgamesh was 2/3 divine; Humbaba was a giant guardian |
| South American (Inca) | Viracocha's Giants | Giants who built megalithic structures |
| Norse | Jotnar (Jotunn) | Frost giants; cosmic beings who oppose the gods |
| European Folklore | Various tales | Jack the Giant Killer; Fomorians (Ireland) |
| Hindu | Asuras & Daityas | Giant races who battle the gods |
| Pacific Islands | Menehune (Hawaii) | Ancient builders (sometimes described as giants) |
If giants were only in Hebrew imagination, why do unconnected cultures worldwide share remarkably similar legends?
| Explanation | Description |
|---|---|
| Common Memory | All cultures descended from Noah's family, preserving memory of pre-Flood giants |
| Megafauna Fossils | Discovery of dinosaur/mammoth bones interpreted as giant humans |
| Exaggerated History | Tales of tall individuals grew over time |
| Universal Mythology | Human tendency to imagine larger-than-life figures |
From a biblical perspective, the "common memory" explanation makes the most sense - all peoples descended from Noah's sons would carry knowledge of the pre-Flood world, including the Nephilim.
1. Why do you think so many cultures have similar giant legends if they developed independently?
2. How does the biblical account of all humanity descending from Noah explain the universal giant legends?
"These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood."

As followers of truth, we must be honest about what is documented versus what is speculation or hoax. Our faith in Scripture does not depend on archaeological "proof." We believe Scripture because it is Yahuah's Word, not because archaeology confirms it.
Pre-1950 newspapers occasionally reported giant skeleton discoveries:
The claim that the "Supreme Court ruled in 2014 that the Smithsonian must release giant skeleton evidence" is a HOAX. This story originated on a satire website (World News Daily Report). There was no such court case. Do not share this false information.
| Topic | Verified Fact |
|---|---|
| Tallest Verified Human | Robert Wadlow - 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m) |
| Cause | Pituitary gigantism (excess growth hormone) |
| Physical Limits | Human biology fails beyond ~9 ft (square-cube law) |
| Wadlow's Death | Age 22 - leg braces caused infection, mobility problems |
1. Why is it important to verify claims before sharing them, even if they seem to support our beliefs?
2. How should we respond when people demand archaeological "proof" of biblical giants?
Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Throughout Scripture, giants represent enemies of Yahuah's people—and they are ALWAYS defeated by faith:
| Giant Enemy | Initial Fear | Victory Through Faith |
|---|---|---|
| Anakim in Canaan | Spies terrified; saw themselves as grasshoppers | Joshua and Caleb conquered them (Joshua 11:21-22) |
| Og of Bashan | Last of the Rephaim; ruled from fortified cities | Defeated by Israel (Deuteronomy 3:1-11) |
| Goliath | Israel's army paralyzed with fear for 40 days | Defeated by a shepherd boy with a sling |
| Philistine giants | Terrorized Israel's warriors | Killed by David's mighty men (2 Samuel 21) |
In our lives, "giants" represent:
| Ten Spies (Fear) | Caleb & Joshua (Faith) |
|---|---|
| "We seemed like grasshoppers" | "Yahuah is with us" |
| "They are stronger than us" | "Their protection is gone" |
| Focused on the giants | Focused on Yahuah's promise |
| Died in the wilderness | Inherited the land |
The size of your giant doesn't matter—the size of your Elohim does.
1. What "giants" are you facing in your life right now? (Health, finances, relationships, spiritual battles, etc.)
2. Are you seeing yourself as a "grasshopper" or as a child of the Most High? How can you shift your perspective?
3. What past victories can you remember that remind you of Yahuah's faithfulness? (Like David remembered the lion and bear)
Write a prayer or commitment regarding the "giants" in your life:
Romans 8:31 - "What then shall we say to these things? If Elohim is for us, who can be against us?"
"What then shall we say to these things? If Elohim is for us, who can be against us?"
