Study Guide - What is Character?

Character is who you are on the inside - how you act when nobody is watching!

Yahuah wants us to have GOOD character. That means:

🙌 Obedience
💙 Kindness
💡 Honesty

In this workbook, you will learn about these important character traits and more!

"Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity."
- 1 Timothy 4:12

Even children can have GREAT character and be an example to others!

1Learning Obedience

RECEIVE - What is Obedience?

Obedience means doing what you are told to do, right away, with a happy heart!

Yahuah wants us to obey:

"Children, obey your parents in Yahuah, for this is right."
- Ephesians 6:1

Bible Story: Samuel Obeys!

When Samuel was just a little boy, he heard Yahuah calling his name at night. Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening!" (1 Samuel 3:10)

Samuel was obedient to Yahuah, and he grew up to be a great prophet!

Obedience is like a gift you give! When you obey your parents quickly and happily, it makes Yahuah smile and it makes your parents' hearts glad!

Memory Verse

"Children, obey your parents in Yahuah, for this is right."
- Ephesians 6:1

What Would YOU Do?

Your mom says, "Please clean up your toys before dinner." What should you do?

REFLECT - Answer the Questions!

1. What does "obedience" mean?

2. Who should children obey?

3. What did Samuel say when Yahuah called him?

4. TRUE or FALSE: It's okay to obey later if you're busy.

RECALL - Draw What You Learned!

Draw yourself obeying your parents with a happy face:

RESPOND - Do It This Week!

2Showing Kindness

RECEIVE - What is Kindness?

Kindness means being nice to others, even when they don't deserve it!

Ways to show kindness:

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as Elohim in Messiah forgave you."
- Ephesians 4:32

Bible Story: The Good Samaritan!

Yahusha told a story about a man who was hurt on the road. Many people walked past him, but one man - a Samaritan - stopped to help!

He bandaged his wounds, put him on his donkey, and paid for him to stay at an inn. The Samaritan showed kindness to a stranger! (Luke 10:30-37)

Kindness is like sunshine! When you are kind to someone, it can make their whole day brighter. And guess what? Being kind makes YOU feel happy too!

Memory Verse

"Be kind to one another."
- Ephesians 4:32

What Would YOU Do?

A new kid at school is sitting alone at lunch. They look sad. What should you do?

2. In the Good Samaritan story, who helped the hurt man?

3. Which of these is showing kindness?

4. TRUE or FALSE: You only need to be kind to people you like.

3Being Honest

RECEIVE - What is Honesty?

Honesty means always telling the truth, even when it's hard!

Being honest means:

"Do not lie to one another."
- Colossians 3:9

Bible Story: Ananias and Sapphira

In the early church, a man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold some land. They promised to give all the money to help others, but they kept some for themselves AND LIED about it!

Yahuah knew they were lying, and they were punished. Yahuah takes honesty VERY seriously! (Acts 5:1-11)

Lying might seem easier in the moment, but it ALWAYS makes things worse! The truth sets you free, but lies trap you in a sticky web. Yahuah loves honest hearts!
"You shall not bear false witness" (That means: Don't lie!)
- Exodus 20:16 (9th Commandment)

Memory Verse

"Do not lie to one another."
- Colossians 3:9

4Loving Others

RECEIVE - What is Love?

Love is the most important character trait! Yahuah IS love!

Love means:

"Love one another. As I have loved you, you also must love one another."
- John 13:34 (Yahusha speaking)
"Elohim is love."
- 1 John 4:8

Bible Story: Yahuah's Amazing Love!

Yahuah loved us SO MUCH that He sent His Son Yahusha to save us! Even though we do wrong things, Yahuah still loves us.

"For Yahuah so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son..." (John 3:16)

That's the greatest love ever!

Love is like a seed - when you plant it by being loving to others, it grows! When you show love to someone, they often show love back. Love makes the whole world better!

Memory Verse

"Love one another."
- John 13:34

5Having Self-Control

RECEIVE - What is Self-Control?

Self-control means being the boss of yourself! It means stopping yourself from doing wrong things, even when you really want to.

Self-control helps you:

"A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls."
- Proverbs 25:28

Bible Story: Daniel's Self-Control

Daniel was taken to live in a foreign land. The king offered him fancy food that wasn't clean according to Yahuah's instructions.

Even though the food looked delicious, Daniel had self-control. He chose to eat only vegetables and water instead! And Yahuah blessed him for it! (Daniel 1:8-16)

Self-control is like a muscle - the more you use it, the stronger it gets! Every time you choose to do the right thing instead of the easy thing, your self-control grows!

Memory Verse

"The fruit of the Spirit is... self-control."
- Galatians 5:22-23

What Would YOU Do?

You're at a friend's house and they have a cookie jar. Your friend isn't looking. You really want a cookie, but you weren't offered one. What should you do?

When we follow Yahuah and have His Spirit in us, we start to grow special "fruit" - good character traits!

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."
- Galatians 5:22-23
Love
😊 Joy
🕊 Peace

RECEIVE - The Best Example!

The very BEST example of good character is Yahusha! He showed us how to live.

Yahusha showed us:

"Yahusha said, 'I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.'"
- John 13:15

Yahusha's Example of Kindness

Little children wanted to see Yahusha, but His disciples tried to send them away. Yahusha said, "Let the little children come to Me!"

Then He blessed every single child. Yahusha loves children and showed kindness to them! (Mark 10:13-16)

When you're not sure what to do, ask yourself: "What would Yahusha do?" He is our perfect example! If we follow Him, we will have good character too!
