Lesson 2: What is a Map?

Maps Help Us See the World
A map is a flat picture that shows us places. Maps help us:
- Find where we are
- See where other places are
- Learn about different lands
- Find our way to new places
Did You Know?
People have made maps for thousands of years! Even in Bible times, people drew maps to show where places were.
Parts of a Map
Maps have special parts:
- Colors - Blue is usually water, green and brown are land
- Shapes - Show different lands
- Names - Tell us what places are called
Different Kinds of Maps

- Maps of the whole world!
Map Colors
When you look at a map:
- Blue = Water (oceans, lakes, rivers)
- Green = Land with plants
- Brown = Mountains or dry land
- White = Snow and ice

Lesson 3: What is a Globe?
Isaiah 40:22 - "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth."
A Special Ball Called a Globe
A globe is a round ball that shows us the whole world. It is shaped like a ball because that is what many people think the earth looks like.
Note for Parents: Different families hold different views about the shape of the earth. This lesson introduces the globe as a common tool while allowing room for discussion of various perspectives.
How Globes and Maps are Different

There are many kinds of land:

- Southern Ocean - Around Antarctica at the bottom of the world

All five oceans are connected! Fish can swim from one ocean to another. Yahuah filled the oceans with wonderful sea creatures!

Lesson 7: Directions - North, South, East, West
Psalm 103:12 - "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."
The Four Directions
To find our way, we use four main directions:
- North - Up on a map (toward the Arctic)
- South - Down on a map (toward Antarctica)
- East - To the right on a map (where the sun rises)
- West - To the left on a map (where the sun sets)
Remember the Directions!
A fun way to remember: Never Eat Soggy Waffles
Start at the top and go around: North, East, South, West!
Using Directions
We use directions to tell where things are:
- "The store is north of our house."
- "The sun rises in the east."
- "Birds fly south in the winter."
- "The sun sets in the west."

On most maps, north is at the top! That is why we say "up north" and "down south."

Different Places Have Different Weather
