What Good Readers Do:

1Finding the Main Idea

The main idea is what a story is mostly about. Ask yourself: "What is this story telling me?"

Look up at the night sky. What do you see? Stars! There are so many stars! Yahuah made all of them.

Some stars are big. Some stars are small. Some stars look bright. Some stars look dim. But Yahuah knows each one!

The Bible says Yahuah calls each star by name. That is amazing! Our Elohim is so great!

Psalm 147:4
"He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name."

2Understanding Characters

Characters are the people, animals, or creatures in a story. We learn about them by what they say, do, and feel.

Long ago, there was a giant named Goliath. He was very tall and very mean. He made fun of Yahuah's people.

There was also a young boy named David. He was small but very brave. David loved Yahuah with all his heart.

David said, "I will fight the giant!" The people were scared for him. But David trusted Yahuah.

What happened? David used a sling and a stone. Yahuah helped David win! The giant fell down.

David was brave because he trusted in Yahuah.

3Story Setting

The setting is WHERE and WHEN a story happens. It's the place and time of the story.

Jonah and the Big Fish

Yahuah told Jonah to go to a big city called Nineveh. But Jonah did not want to go. He got on a boat and sailed far away.

Then a big storm came! The waves were huge. The men on the boat were scared.

Jonah knew the storm was because of him. He jumped into the water. A big fish swallowed Jonah!

Jonah was inside the fish for three days. There, he prayed to Yahuah. Then the fish spit Jonah out onto dry land.

This time, Jonah went where Yahuah told him to go!

4Order of Events (Sequence)

Sequence means the order things happen. Look for words like: first, then, next, after, finally, last.

After that, He made the sun, moon, and stars.

5Making Predictions

A prediction is a guess about what will happen next. Good readers think ahead! Use clues from the story to make your prediction.

Daniel and the Lions

Daniel loved Yahuah very much. He prayed to Yahuah three times every day.

Some bad men did not like Daniel. They made a law that said no one could pray to Yahuah. But Daniel kept praying anyway!

The bad men caught Daniel praying. The king was sad, but he had to follow the law. Daniel was thrown into a den full of hungry lions!

What Really Happened...

Daniel spent all night with the lions. But Yahuah sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths! The lions did not hurt Daniel at all.

In the morning, the king was so happy! He said, "Daniel's Elohim is the living Elohim!"

6Cause and Effect

Cause = Why something happened
Effect = What happened
Ask: "Why did this happen?" and "What happened because of it?"

The Tower of Babel

Long ago, all people spoke the same language. They could all understand each other.

The people got together and said, "Let us build a tower up to the sky! We will make a name for ourselves!"

But this made Yahuah sad. The people were being proud. They forgot about Yahuah.

So Yahuah mixed up their words. Now they spoke different languages! Because they could not understand each other, they stopped building.

The people went out to live in different places all over the earth.

Adam and Eve had two sons. Both were brothers. Both brought gifts to Yahuah.

But they were different! Abel was a shepherd. He took care of sheep. Cain was a farmer. He grew plants.

Abel brought his best sheep to Yahuah. Yahuah was happy with Abel's gift.

Cain brought some fruit. But he did not give his best. Yahuah was not happy with Cain's gift.

This made Cain angry. Yahuah told Cain to do what is right. But Cain did not listen.

8Using Context Clues

Context clues are hints in the sentence that help you figure out what a word means. Look at the words around it!

The Flood

Many years ago, people forgot about Yahuah. They did bad things. Yahuah was grieved—He felt very sad in His heart.

But Noah was different! Noah was righteous—he did what was right. He loved Yahuah.

Yahuah told Noah to build a huge boat called an ark. The ark was enormous—bigger than a house!

Noah brought many animals into the ark. Two of each kind went in. Then Yahuah sent a great flood. Water covered everything!

But Noah and his family were safe inside the ark.

Use Context Clues!

The Good Samaritan

One day, a man was walking down a road. Bad men hurt him and took his things. They left him on the ground.

A priest walked by. He saw the hurt man but did not stop. He walked on the other side of the road.

Then another man came. He also walked by without helping.

Then a Samaritan came. He stopped! He helped the hurt man. He cleaned his wounds. He put him on his donkey. He took him to an inn and paid for him to stay.

Yahusha asked, "Who was a good neighbor?" The answer was clear—the one who helped!
