Numbers, Addition, Subtraction & More
Grade 2Yahuah is the Creator of numbers and math! This year we'll learn:
Every digit in a number has a special PLACE that tells us its VALUE!
| Tens | Ones |
|---|---|
| 4 | 7 |
47 = 4 tens + 7 ones = 40 + 7
3 tens = 30
5 ones = 5
Write the value of the underlined digit:
1. 63 → The 3 is worth
2. 58 → The 5 is worth
3. 92 → The 9 is worth
4. 74 → The 4 is worth
Write each number in expanded form:
5. 56 = +
6. 83 = +
7. 29 = +
Write the number:
8. 7 tens + 2 ones =
9. 4 tens + 9 ones =
10. 60 + 5 =
Now we add a NEW place - the hundreds place!
| Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 7 |
347 = 300 + 40 + 7 = 3 hundreds + 4 tens + 7 ones
2 hundreds = 200
3 tens = 30
4 ones = 4
Write the value of each digit:
1. 582: The 5 = , The 8 = , The 2 =
2. 419: The 4 = , The 1 = , The 9 =
Write in expanded form:
3. 256 = + +
4. 703 = + +
Write the number:
5. 6 hundreds + 2 tens + 8 ones =
6. 400 + 50 + 3 =
7. 800 + 7 =
In the number 592, which digit is in the hundreds place?
What is the value of the 9?
We use special symbols to compare numbers:
> means "greater than" (the big side points to the bigger number)
< means "less than" (the small point points to the smaller number)
= means "equal to"
Think of a hungry alligator - it always eats the BIGGER number! 🐊
Write >, <, or = :
1. 45 54
2. 83 38
3. 67 67
4. 256 265
5. 401 410
6. 789 798
Order these numbers from least to greatest:
7. 52, 25, 45: , ,
8. 321, 312, 231: , ,
When you add and get more than 9 in a place, you need to regroup (or carry)!
| Tens | Ones | |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 7 | |
| + | 3 | 5 |
| 8 | 2 |
Step 1: 7 + 5 = 12. Write 2, carry the 1 to tens.
Step 2: 1 + 4 + 3 = 8 tens.
Answer: 82
Add. Show your work:
Add 3-digit numbers:
When the top digit is smaller than the bottom, you need to borrow from the next place!
Problem: We can't take 7 from 2!
Step 1: Borrow 1 ten from the 5 (now 4 tens). Add 10 to the 2 (now 12 ones).
| Tens | Ones | |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 12 | |
| − | 2 | 7 |
| 2 | 5 |
Step 2: 12 - 7 = 5 ones
Step 3: 4 - 2 = 2 tens
Answer: 25
Subtract. Show your work:
Subtract 3-digit numbers:
Multiplication is a fast way to add the SAME number many times!
3 groups of 4 apples = 3 × 4 = 12 apples
To multiply by 2, skip count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12...
To multiply by 5, skip count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25...
To multiply by 10, skip count by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50...
Write as multiplication:
1. 5 + 5 + 5 = × =
2. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = × =
3. 10 + 10 + 10 = × =
Use skip counting to multiply:
4. 4 × 2 =
5. 3 × 5 =
6. 6 × 10 =
7. 5 × 5 =
8. 7 × 2 =
Draw arrays:
9. Draw 2 rows of 5 dots. Write the multiplication:
Let's learn about coins and how to count them!
Penny
1 cent
Nickel
5 cents
Dime
10 cents
Quarter
25 cents
Count: 25... 35... 45... 50... 51... 52 cents = 52¢
Count the money:
1. 25¢25¢10¢ = ¢
2. 10¢10¢5¢1¢ = ¢
3. 25¢5¢5¢1¢1¢1¢ = ¢
Make this amount using the fewest coins:
4. 35¢ = quarter(s) + dime(s)
5. 47¢ = quarter(s) + dime(s) + nickel(s) + pennies
A clock has two hands:
| Time | How to Say It | Minute Hand Points To |
|---|---|---|
| 3:00 | "Three o'clock" | 12 (top) |
| 3:15 | "Quarter past three" | 3 |
| 3:30 | "Half past three" | 6 (bottom) |
| 3:45 | "Quarter to four" | 9 |
Write the time:
1. Hour hand on 7, minute hand on 12: :
2. Hour hand between 2 and 3, minute hand on 6: :
3. Hour hand on 9, minute hand on 3: :
What time is it in 30 minutes?
4. It's 4:00. In 30 minutes it will be :
5. It's 8:30. In 30 minutes it will be :
We measure things to find out how long, tall, or heavy they are!
| Unit | About How Long? | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Inch (in) | Width of your thumb | Small things |
| Foot (ft) | 12 inches (about your foot) | Medium things |
| Yard (yd) | 3 feet (about arm span) | Bigger things |
| Centimeter (cm) | Width of fingernail | Small things (metric) |
| Meter (m) | 100 centimeters | Bigger things (metric) |
Which unit would you use to measure:
1. A pencil - (inches or feet?)
2. A room - (inches or feet?)
3. A football field - (feet or yards?)
Measure and estimate:
4. About how many inches long is your hand? inches
5. About how many feet tall are you? feet
Convert:
6. 2 feet = inches
7. 1 yard = feet
