The Heavens Declare His Glory
Youth Tier 2 | Grades 7-10

Course Overview

The heavens are Yahuah's masterpiece, designed to declare His glory and give us signs for seasons, days, and years. This course explores the sun, moon, stars, and heavenly bodies from Scripture's perspective, examining what we can actually observe versus what we're told to believe.

Psalm 19:1 - "The heavens declare the glory of El; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."

Lesson 1: The Heavens Declare

📖 RECEIVE: Yahuah's Canvas

The heavens are not random cosmic accidents—they are Yahuah's deliberate creation, designed with purpose and meaning.

Genesis 1:14-18 - "And Elohim said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so."

Four Purposes of the Heavenly Lights:

  1. Signs: Indicators of significant events
  2. Seasons: Hebrew "moadim" = appointed times/feasts
  3. Days: Marking the passage of each day
  4. Years: Tracking annual cycles

Created on Day 4

The sun, moon, and stars were created on Day 4 of creation week—after the earth, light, water, and plants were already made. This order contradicts evolutionary models that claim the sun formed before Earth.

Lesson 2: The Firmament

📖 RECEIVE: The Raqia

Scripture describes a firmament (Hebrew: raqia) that separates the waters above from the waters below. The sun, moon, and stars are placed in this firmament.

Genesis 1:6-8 - "And Elohim said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And Elohim made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And Elohim called the firmament Heaven."

What Scripture Says About the Firmament:

  • It divides waters above from waters below (Genesis 1:6-7)
  • The sun, moon, and stars are in the firmament (Genesis 1:14-17)
  • It is stretched out like a tent/curtain (Isaiah 40:22, Psalm 104:2)
  • It is strong like a molten looking glass (Job 37:18)
  • It has windows that can open (Genesis 7:11, Malachi 3:10)

The Hebrew Word "Raqia"

The word raqia comes from a root meaning "to beat out" or "spread out"—like hammering metal into a thin sheet. It describes something solid and extended, not empty space.

Modern Claim: Empty Space

Modern cosmology claims space is a near-perfect vacuum extending billions of light years. There is no "firmament" in this model—just empty void with scattered matter. But Scripture repeatedly describes a solid structure.

Lesson 3: The Sun

📖 RECEIVE: The Greater Light

The sun is called the "greater light" to rule the day. Scripture consistently describes the sun as moving, not the earth.

Psalm 19:4-6 - "In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof."

What Scripture Says About the Sun:

  • It is the "greater light" to rule the day (Genesis 1:16)
  • It has a tabernacle/dwelling place (Psalm 19:4)
  • It runs a circuit/path (Psalm 19:6)
  • It rises and goes down (Ecclesiastes 1:5)
  • It can be commanded to stand still (Joshua 10:12-13)
  • It can go backwards (Isaiah 38:8)

What We Observe

Every day, we observe the sun rise in the east and set in the west. We feel no motion of the earth. The sun appears to move across the sky in an arc—exactly as Scripture describes.

Modern Claim

Modern science claims the earth rotates at ~1,000 mph at the equator while orbiting the sun at ~67,000 mph. We're told we don't feel this motion because it's constant. But Scripture says the earth is fixed and the sun moves.

Lesson 4: The Moon

📖 RECEIVE: The Lesser Light

The moon is the "lesser light" to rule the night. Scripture describes the moon as having its own light, not merely reflecting sunlight.

Genesis 1:16 - "And Elohim made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night."

Isaiah 30:26 - "Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun..."

The Moon's Purposes:

  • Light at night: To illuminate the darkness
  • Appointed times: The Hebrew calendar is lunar-based
  • New months: Each new moon begins a new month
  • Signs: Eclipses and blood moons as signs

The Hebrew Calendar

Yahuah's calendar is based on the moon. Each month begins with the new moon (Psalm 81:3). The feasts of Yahuah (Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles) are calculated by the moon's phases.

Moonlight is Different

Interesting observation: Objects in direct moonlight are cooler than objects in moon shadows. If the moon merely reflected sunlight (which is hot), why would moonlight have a cooling effect? This has been measured and documented.

Lesson 5: The Stars

📖 RECEIVE: Lights in the Firmament

The stars are lights set in the firmament. Scripture presents them very differently than modern astronomy.

Genesis 1:16-17 - "He made the stars also. And Elohim set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth."

What Scripture Says About Stars:

  • They are set in the firmament (Genesis 1:17)
  • They give light upon the earth (Genesis 1:17)
  • They can be numbered by Yahuah (Psalm 147:4)
  • Each star is unique—they differ in glory (1 Corinthians 15:41)
  • They can fall to earth (Revelation 6:13, Matthew 24:29)
  • They sing together (Job 38:7)

Stars Can Fall?

Scripture says stars can fall to earth (Matthew 24:29, Revelation 6:13, 8:10). If stars were truly massive suns billions of miles away, even one falling to earth would destroy our entire solar system. Either Scripture is wrong, or stars are not what we've been told.

Modern Claim

Modern astronomy claims stars are massive balls of burning gas, many larger than our sun, located trillions of miles away. The nearest star (besides the sun) is said to be 4+ light years away. But no one has ever traveled there to verify this.

Lesson 6: Constellations & Signs

📖 RECEIVE: The Mazzaroth

The constellations (Hebrew: Mazzaroth) are star groupings that tell a story across the heavens. Many believe the original meaning proclaimed the Gospel before Scripture was written.

Job 38:31-32 - "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?"

Constellations Mentioned in Scripture:

Hebrew NameConstellationPossible Meaning
KimahPleiadesThe congregation
KesilOrionThe strong one/fool
AyishArcturus (Big Dipper)The bear
MazzarothThe ZodiacThe path/circle

The Gospel in the Stars?

Some scholars believe the original 12 constellations told the story of redemption:

  • Virgo: The virgin (virgin birth)
  • Leo: The lion (Lion of Judah)
  • Libra: The scales (judgment)
  • Scorpio: The scorpion (Satan's attack)

This is the original purpose before pagan astrology corrupted the meaning.

Astrology vs. Biblical Astronomy

Astrology (forbidden - Deuteronomy 18:10-12) claims stars control human destiny. Biblical astronomy recognizes stars as signs from Yahuah that declare His glory and story—not controllers of fate.

✏️ RECALL: Practice Questions

Lesson 7: The Wandering Stars (Planets)

📖 RECEIVE: Planets in Scripture

The word "planet" comes from Greek meaning "wanderer." Unlike fixed stars, planets appear to wander through the constellations. Scripture mentions these differently than regular stars.

Jude 1:13 - "...wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever."

Observable Planets:

Five planets are visible to the naked eye and have been observed since ancient times:

PlanetNamed AfterVisible
MercuryRoman messenger godNear sunrise/sunset
VenusRoman goddess of loveMorning/evening "star"
MarsRoman god of warRed appearance
JupiterRoman king of godsVery bright
SaturnRoman god of timeVisible to naked eye

What We Can Observe

Through telescopes, we can observe that planets look different from stars—they appear as discs rather than points of light. They move through the constellations over time. These are verifiable observations.

Distinguishing Observation from Theory

We can observe: Planets exist, move differently than stars, and have distinct appearances.

We cannot directly verify: Their exact distance, size, composition, or whether they are "worlds" like earth. These are interpretations, not observations.

✏️ RECALL: Practice Questions

Lesson 8: Biblical vs. Modern Cosmology

📖 RECEIVE: Two Different Models

The biblical model of the heavens differs significantly from the modern scientific model. Let's compare them honestly:

TopicBiblical ModelModern Model
Earth's ShapeCircle/disc with edges (Isaiah 40:22)Spinning sphere
Earth's MotionFixed, immovable (1 Chronicles 16:30)Rotating and orbiting
Sun's MotionMoves in a circuit (Psalm 19:6)Stationary relative to earth
Sky StructureSolid firmament (Job 37:18)Empty space/vacuum
StarsLights in firmament; can fallDistant suns; trillions of miles away
Age~6,000 years~13.8 billion years
1 Chronicles 16:30 - "Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved."

Psalm 93:1 - "...the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved."

Questions to Consider

  • Why does Scripture consistently describe the sun moving, not the earth?
  • Why does Scripture describe a solid firmament if space is a vacuum?
  • How can stars fall to earth if they are massive distant suns?
  • Should we interpret Scripture by science, or evaluate science by Scripture?
✏️ RECALL: Practice Questions

Lesson 9: Signs in the Heavens

📖 RECEIVE: Celestial Signs

Yahuah uses the heavens to give signs. These are not astrology (predicting personal futures), but divine communications about significant events.

Luke 21:25 - "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations..."

Joel 2:31 - "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Yahuah come."

Biblical Celestial Signs:

  • Star of Bethlehem: Announced Yahusha's birth (Matthew 2:2)
  • Darkness at crucifixion: 3 hours of darkness (Matthew 27:45)
  • Blood moons: Sign of coming judgment (Joel 2:31)
  • Darkened sun: End times sign (Matthew 24:29)
  • Stars falling: Sign of the end (Revelation 6:13)

The Star of Bethlehem

The Magi followed a star to find the Messiah. This star:

  • Appeared at a specific time
  • Was recognized by wise men studying the heavens
  • Moved and "stood over" where Yahusha was

No natural phenomenon fully explains this—it was supernatural.

✏️ RECALL: Practice Questions

Lesson 10: The Creator's Purpose

📖 RECEIVE: Why the Heavens Matter

The heavens exist for Yahuah's purposes and His glory. Understanding this helps us see creation rightly.

The Purposes of the Heavens:

  1. Declare Yahuah's glory (Psalm 19:1)
  2. Show His handiwork (Psalm 19:1)
  3. Give light to the earth (Genesis 1:15)
  4. Mark time - days, months, years, seasons (Genesis 1:14)
  5. Serve as signs of significant events (Luke 21:25)
  6. Reveal His power and deity (Romans 1:20)
Romans 1:20 - "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse."

We Are Special

Modern cosmology teaches we are insignificant specks on a tiny planet in an infinite, purposeless universe. Scripture teaches the opposite: Earth is the center of Yahuah's creation, and humanity is made in His image. The heavens were made for us—for light, for signs, for seasons.

🤔 REFLECT: Critical Thinking

When studying the heavens, consider:

  • What can we directly observe? (sunrise/sunset, moon phases, star positions)
  • What requires interpretation? (distances, sizes, compositions)
  • What does Scripture say? (and do we take it at face value?)
  • Who benefits from each narrative? (Does the model glorify Yahuah or diminish Him?)
