Carbon dating limitations
Assumptions in dating methods
Youth Edition (Ages 12-17) • 6Rs Learning Method
Understanding the assumptions behind the "millions of years"
This workbook uses the 6Rs Learning Method for deep understanding:
You've probably heard scientists say things like "This fossil is 50,000 years old!" But how do they know? One method they use is called radiocarbon dating (or carbon-14 dating).
1. Carbon dating measures an isotope called __________ (C-14).
2. The half-life of C-14 is about __________ years.
3. Carbon dating only works on things that were once __________ (living/dead).
4. After about 50,000 years, there shouldn't be any __________ left.
Carbon dating ONLY works on things that were once alive (like wood, bones, or plants). It does NOT work on rocks or fossils that have turned to stone. So how do scientists date dinosaur fossils? (Hint: They can't use carbon dating!)
Write everything you remember about how carbon dating works:
Explain to a family member how carbon dating works in your own words.
Who did you teach? Date:
"The sum of Your word is truth."
Here's what most textbooks won't tell you: every carbon date depends on THREE assumptions that scientists can't actually prove!
| # | Assumption | The Problem |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | We know how much C-14 was there at the start | We can't go back in time to check! |
| 2 | Nothing added or removed C-14 since death | Water, bacteria, and chemicals can contaminate samples |
| 3 | The decay rate has always been the same | We've only measured it for about 100 years |
Which of these is NOT one of the three assumptions of carbon dating?
How could Noah's Flood mess up assumption #1 (the starting amount of C-14)?
List the three assumptions from memory:
Explain to someone why assumptions matter in science.
Who did you teach? Date:
"They willfully forget that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old."
One of the biggest problems with carbon dating is contamination — when modern carbon gets mixed in with old samples.
1. __________ carries modern carbon into old samples underground.
2. Modern contamination makes samples appear __________ (older/younger).
3. __________ and fungi can add living carbon to dead things.
List 4 sources of contamination and explain what contamination does to age results:
Explain to someone why contamination is a problem for carbon dating.
Who did you teach? Date:
"He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him."
Carbon dating has produced some really embarrassing results that show the method isn't always reliable.
| Sample | What Happened |
|---|---|
| Living snails | Dated as 27,000 years old! (reservoir effect) |
| Fresh seal carcass | Dated as 1,300 years old |
| Living mollusk shells | Dated as 2,300 years old |
| Wood inside lava flow | Wood dated older than the rock around it |
The "reservoir effect" happens when:
If living snails can be dated at 27,000 years old, what does that tell us about dates given for fossils we can't observe being alive?
List 3 famous dating failures and explain the reservoir effect:
Share a dating failure example with someone and explain what went wrong.
Who did you teach? Date:
"Test all things; hold fast that which is good."
Here's something fascinating: scientists have found measurable C-14 in things that are supposedly millions of years old!
| View | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Mainstream (Old Earth) | It must be contamination |
| Biblical (Young Earth) | The materials really are young, consistent with Creation |
Why do you think mainstream scientists prefer to explain the C-14 in diamonds as "contamination" rather than consider the materials might be young?
List 4 "ancient" materials where C-14 has been found, and explain why this is surprising:
Explain to someone why finding C-14 in coal and diamonds is significant.
Who did you teach? Date:
"For in six days Yahuah made heaven and earth."
Noah's Flood wasn't just a lot of rain — it was a global catastrophe that would have completely changed the world's carbon balance!
If pre-Flood C-14 was lower than today, early post-Flood samples would:
1. The Flood buried massive amounts of __________ and animals.
2. Lower pre-Flood C-14 makes samples appear __________ than they are.
3. After the Flood, it took __________ for C-14 levels to stabilize.
How does understanding the Flood help explain why carbon dating gives such old ages while still believing in a young earth?
Explain how the Flood could affect carbon dating results:
Explain to someone how the Flood provides an alternative explanation for "old" dates.
Who did you teach? Date:
"The fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."
One of the most important lessons about carbon dating is learning to separate what's actually measured from what's assumed.
When someone says "This fossil is 40,000 years old," what are they actually saying — a measurement or an interpretation?
List what's actually measured vs. what's interpreted in carbon dating:
Explain to someone the difference between measurement and interpretation.
Who did you teach? Date:
"Worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea."
As followers of Yahusha, we're called to think critically and hold to Scripture as our foundation. Here's how to approach dating claims wisely.
1. Carbon dating only works to about __________ years.
2. Yahuah gives us __________ and understanding.
3. Scripture is our __________ for truth.
4. Only __________ was there at the beginning.
Write 3 respectful questions you could ask someone who claims something is "millions of years old":
Write the 5 questions to ask about any dating claim:
Share with someone how to think critically about dating claims while being kind.
Who did you teach? Date:
"For Yahuah gives wisdom; out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding."
1. C-14; 2. 5,730; 3. living; 4. C-14
