What You'll Learn

Lesson 1: What Is Carbon Dating?

You've probably heard scientists say things like "This fossil is 50,000 years old!" But how do they know? One method they use is called radiocarbon dating (or carbon-14 dating).

How It Works (Simply):

  1. A special kind of carbon called C-14 is made in the atmosphere
  2. Living things absorb C-14 while they're alive
  3. When something dies, the C-14 starts to break down (decay)
  4. Scientists measure how much C-14 is left to guess how old something is
Important Fact: C-14 has a "half-life" of about 5,730 years. This means every 5,730 years, half of it is gone. After about 50,000-60,000 years, there shouldn't be any left to measure!
Exodus 20:11 — "For in six days Yahuah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them."

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Carbon dating measures an isotope called __________ (C-14).

2. The half-life of C-14 is about __________ years.

3. Carbon dating only works on things that were once __________ (living/dead).

4. After about 50,000 years, there shouldn't be any __________ left.

Think About It:

Carbon dating ONLY works on things that were once alive (like wood, bones, or plants). It does NOT work on rocks or fossils that have turned to stone. So how do scientists date dinosaur fossils? (Hint: They can't use carbon dating!)

RECALL (Close the book first!)

Write everything you remember about how carbon dating works:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to a family member how carbon dating works in your own words.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Psalm 119:160

"The sum of Your word is truth."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 2: The Three Hidden Assumptions

Here's what most textbooks won't tell you: every carbon date depends on THREE assumptions that scientists can't actually prove!

The 3 Assumptions:

#AssumptionThe Problem
1We know how much C-14 was there at the startWe can't go back in time to check!
2Nothing added or removed C-14 since deathWater, bacteria, and chemicals can contaminate samples
3The decay rate has always been the sameWe've only measured it for about 100 years
2 Peter 3:5-6 — "They willfully forget that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old, and the earth... the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water."
Key Point: An assumption is something you BELIEVE is true but can't actually PROVE. If any of these assumptions is wrong, the age calculation will be wrong too!

Multiple Choice:

Which of these is NOT one of the three assumptions of carbon dating?

True or False:

Think About It:

How could Noah's Flood mess up assumption #1 (the starting amount of C-14)?

RECALL (Close the book first!)

List the three assumptions from memory:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to someone why assumptions matter in science.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: 2 Peter 3:5

"They willfully forget that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 3: Contamination Problems

One of the biggest problems with carbon dating is contamination — when modern carbon gets mixed in with old samples.

Common Contamination Sources:

What Contamination Does: Modern carbon makes old samples appear YOUNGER than they really are. Even tiny amounts can cause big errors!
Proverbs 18:13 — "He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him."

True or False:

Fill in the Blanks:

1. __________ carries modern carbon into old samples underground.

2. Modern contamination makes samples appear __________ (older/younger).

3. __________ and fungi can add living carbon to dead things.

RECALL (Close the book first!)

List 4 sources of contamination and explain what contamination does to age results:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to someone why contamination is a problem for carbon dating.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Proverbs 18:13

"He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 4: Famous Dating Failures

Carbon dating has produced some really embarrassing results that show the method isn't always reliable.

Real Examples of Dating Failures:

SampleWhat Happened
Living snailsDated as 27,000 years old! (reservoir effect)
Fresh seal carcassDated as 1,300 years old
Living mollusk shellsDated as 2,300 years old
Wood inside lava flowWood dated older than the rock around it
The Reservoir Effect: Some environments have "old carbon" that has very little C-14. Animals that live in these places (like marine creatures) absorb this old carbon and appear much older than they really are.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 — "Test all things; hold fast that which is good."

Multiple Choice:

The "reservoir effect" happens when:

Think About It:

If living snails can be dated at 27,000 years old, what does that tell us about dates given for fossils we can't observe being alive?

RECALL (Close the book first!)

List 3 famous dating failures and explain the reservoir effect:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Share a dating failure example with someone and explain what went wrong.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:21

"Test all things; hold fast that which is good."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 5: C-14 in "Ancient" Materials

Here's something fascinating: scientists have found measurable C-14 in things that are supposedly millions of years old!

C-14 Found In:

The Problem: If these things were really millions of years old, there should be ZERO C-14 left! Remember, after about 50,000-60,000 years, all the C-14 should be gone. Finding measurable C-14 suggests these materials are much younger!
Exodus 20:11 — "For in six days Yahuah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day."

Two Possible Explanations:

ViewExplanation
Mainstream (Old Earth)It must be contamination
Biblical (Young Earth)The materials really are young, consistent with Creation

True or False:

Think About It:

Why do you think mainstream scientists prefer to explain the C-14 in diamonds as "contamination" rather than consider the materials might be young?

RECALL (Close the book first!)

List 4 "ancient" materials where C-14 has been found, and explain why this is surprising:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to someone why finding C-14 in coal and diamonds is significant.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Exodus 20:11

"For in six days Yahuah made heaven and earth."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 6: How the Flood Changes Everything

Noah's Flood wasn't just a lot of rain — it was a global catastrophe that would have completely changed the world's carbon balance!

How the Flood Affects Carbon Dating:

  1. Massive burial of life - The Flood buried enormous amounts of plants and animals (now coal, oil, fossils)
  2. Less C-14 before the Flood - The pre-Flood world may have had a different C-14/C-12 ratio
  3. Changed atmosphere - Volcanic activity and rapid burial changed atmospheric conditions
  4. Rebalancing period - After the Flood, it took centuries for C-14 levels to stabilize
What This Means: If pre-Flood C-14 levels were lower than today, then organisms from right after the Flood would appear MUCH older than they really are!
Genesis 7:11 — "The same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

Multiple Choice:

If pre-Flood C-14 was lower than today, early post-Flood samples would:

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The Flood buried massive amounts of __________ and animals.

2. Lower pre-Flood C-14 makes samples appear __________ than they are.

3. After the Flood, it took __________ for C-14 levels to stabilize.

Think About It:

How does understanding the Flood help explain why carbon dating gives such old ages while still believing in a young earth?

RECALL (Close the book first!)

Explain how the Flood could affect carbon dating results:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to someone how the Flood provides an alternative explanation for "old" dates.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Genesis 7:11

"The fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 7: Measurement vs. Interpretation

One of the most important lessons about carbon dating is learning to separate what's actually measured from what's assumed.

What's Actually Measured:

What's Interpreted (Assumed):

KEY DISTINCTION: The MEASUREMENT is scientific. The AGE is an INTERPRETATION based on assumptions. Never confuse the two!
Revelation 14:7 — "Fear Elohim, and give glory to Him... and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."

True or False:

Think About It:

When someone says "This fossil is 40,000 years old," what are they actually saying — a measurement or an interpretation?

RECALL (Close the book first!)

List what's actually measured vs. what's interpreted in carbon dating:

TEACH-BACK Challenge

Explain to someone the difference between measurement and interpretation.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Revelation 14:7

"Worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea."

RESPOND This Week:

Lesson 8: Thinking Biblically About Dating Claims

As followers of Yahusha, we're called to think critically and hold to Scripture as our foundation. Here's how to approach dating claims wisely.

Questions to Ask About Any Dating Claim:

  1. What method was used? (Carbon dating only works to ~50,000 years)
  2. What assumptions does the method require?
  3. Has the date been verified by another method?
  4. What was the error range? (±500 years? ±5,000 years?)
  5. Does this fit with Scripture's timeline?
Proverbs 2:6 — "For Yahuah gives wisdom; out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding."

Our Foundation:

Remember: Science deals with the present. It can measure things today, but it can't directly observe the past. Only Yahuah was there at the beginning!

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Carbon dating only works to about __________ years.

2. Yahuah gives us __________ and understanding.

3. Scripture is our __________ for truth.

4. Only __________ was there at the beginning.

Think About It:

Write 3 respectful questions you could ask someone who claims something is "millions of years old":
