Lesson 1: What Is Carbon Dating?

You've probably heard scientists say things like "This fossil is 50,000 years old!" But how do they know? One method they use is called radiocarbon dating (or carbon-14 dating).

How It Works (Simply):

A special kind of carbon called C-14 is made in the atmosphere
Living things absorb C-14 while they're alive
When something dies, the C-14 starts to break down (decay)
Scientists measure how much C-14 is left to guess how old something is

Important Fact: C-14 has a "half-life" of about 5,730 years. This means every 5,730 years, half of it is gone. After about 50,000-60,000 years, there shouldn't be any left to measure!

Think About It:

Carbon dating ONLY works on things that were once alive (like wood, bones, or plants). It does NOT work on rocks or fossils that have turned to stone. So how do scientists date dinosaur fossils? (Hint: They can't use carbon dating!)

Lesson 2: The Three Hidden Assumptions

Here's what most textbooks won't tell you: every carbon date depends on THREE assumptions that scientists can't actually prove!

The 3 Assumptions:

1	We know how much C-14 was there at the start	We can't go back in time to check!
2	Nothing added or removed C-14 since death	Water, bacteria, and chemicals can contaminate samples
3	The decay rate has always been the same	We've only measured it for about 100 years

2 Peter 3:5-6 — "They willfully forget that by the word of Elohim the heavens were of old, and the earth... the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water."

Key Point: An assumption is something you BELIEVE is true but can't actually PROVE. If any of these assumptions is wrong, the age calculation will be wrong too!

Lesson 3: Contamination Problems

One of the biggest problems with carbon dating is contamination — when modern carbon gets mixed in with old samples.

Common Contamination Sources:

Groundwater - carries modern carbon into old samples
Bacteria and fungi - add living carbon to dead things
Handling - even touching a sample can contaminate it
Museum preservatives - glues and chemicals used to protect artifacts

What Contamination Does: Modern carbon makes old samples appear YOUNGER than they really are. Even tiny amounts can cause big errors!

Lesson 4: Famous Dating Failures

Carbon dating has produced some really embarrassing results that show the method isn't always reliable.

Real Examples of Dating Failures:

Sample	What Happened
Living snails	Dated as 27,000 years old! (reservoir effect)
Fresh seal carcass	Dated as 1,300 years old
Living mollusk shells	Dated as 2,300 years old
Wood inside lava flow	Wood dated older than the rock around it

The Reservoir Effect: Some environments have "old carbon" that has very little C-14. Animals that live in these places (like marine creatures) absorb this old carbon and appear much older than they really are.

Lesson 5: C-14 in "Ancient" Materials

Here's something fascinating: scientists have found measurable C-14 in things that are supposedly millions of years old!

C-14 Found In:

Coal - supposedly 300 million years old
Oil - supposedly millions of years old
Dinosaur fossils - supposedly 65+ million years old
Diamonds - supposedly billions of years old

The Problem: If these things were really millions of years old, there should be ZERO C-14 left! Remember, after about 50,000-60,000 years, all the C-14 should be gone. Finding measurable C-14 suggests these materials are much younger!

Two Possible Explanations:

Lesson 6: How the Flood Changes Everything

Noah's Flood wasn't just a lot of rain — it was a global catastrophe that would have completely changed the world's carbon balance!

How the Flood Affects Carbon Dating:

Massive burial of life - The Flood buried enormous amounts of plants and animals (now coal, oil, fossils)
Less C-14 before the Flood - The pre-Flood world may have had a different C-14/C-12 ratio
Changed atmosphere - Volcanic activity and rapid burial changed atmospheric conditions
Rebalancing period - After the Flood, it took centuries for C-14 levels to stabilize

What This Means: If pre-Flood C-14 levels were lower than today, then organisms from right after the Flood would appear MUCH older than they really are!

Genesis 7:11 — "The same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

Lesson 7: Measurement vs. Interpretation

One of the most important lessons about carbon dating is learning to separate what's actually measured from what's assumed.

What's Actually Measured:

The ratio of C-14 to C-12 in the sample (this is real data)
The counting of radioactive decay events

What's Interpreted (Assumed):

The starting ratio of C-14
That nothing was added or removed
That decay rates never changed
The actual "age" of the sample

KEY DISTINCTION: The MEASUREMENT is scientific. The AGE is an INTERPRETATION based on assumptions. Never confuse the two!
