What the Bible Says About What We Eat
TRUTH CARRIERS EDUCATION
Youth Edition (Ages 12-17)
In this workbook, you'll discover what Yahuah says about food:
Yahuah gave us clear rules for which land animals we can eat. They must meet BOTH requirements!
An animal must have BOTH to be clean!
| Animal | Split Hoof? | Chews Cud? | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cow/Beef | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Sheep/Lamb | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Goat | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Deer/Venison | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| PIG | β Yes | β No | UNCLEAN |
| Rabbit | β No | β Yes | UNCLEAN |
| Horse | β No | β No | UNCLEAN |
The pig looks clean externally (it has a split hoof) but fails the internal test (doesn't chew cud). This is a spiritual lesson: outward appearance can deceive!
1. To be clean, a land animal must have:
β A) Split hoof only β B) Chew cud only β C) Both split hoof AND chew cud β D) Neither
2. Why is the pig unclean?
β A) No split hoof β B) Doesn't chew cud β C) Both β D) It's actually clean
Close this workbook! Write the 2 requirements for clean land animals and 3 examples of clean animals:
"For I am Yahuah your Elohim: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy."
For fish and water animals, Yahuah gave us another set of rules.
"Abomination" = Χ©ΦΆΧΧ§ΦΆΧ₯ (sheqets)
This is STRONGER than just "unclean" (tame)!
It means something detestable, to be utterly rejected!
| Water Creature | Fins? | Scales? | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salmon | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Tuna | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Tilapia | β Yes | β Yes | CLEAN |
| Shrimp | β No | β No | ABOMINATION |
| Lobster | β No | β No | ABOMINATION |
| Crab | β No | β No | ABOMINATION |
| Catfish | β Yes | β No | UNCLEAN |
Shellfish (shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, clams) are called ABOMINATIONβthe strongest word! Yahuah really doesn't want us eating these!
1. Shrimp is clean because it's popular. β True β False
2. Clean fish must have BOTH fins AND scales. β True β False
3. "Sheqets" is stronger than "unclean." β True β False
What are the requirements for clean fish? Name 3 types of unclean shellfish:
Explain to someone why shellfish are called "abomination" in Scripture.
Who I taught:
Before giving food laws in Deuteronomy 14, Yahuah tells us WHO we are!
"Holy" = Χ’Φ·Χ Χ§ΦΈΧΧΦΉΧ©Χ (am qadosh) = Holy/Set-apart People
"Special Treasure" = Χ‘Φ°ΧΦ»ΧΦΈΦΌΧ (segullah) = Treasured Possession
Notice the order:
We don't EARN holiness by eating clean food. We MAINTAIN our holy status through obedience!
1. According to Deuteronomy 14, we are:
β A) Random people β B) Holy people, Yahuah's treasure β C) Ordinary β D) Nothing special
2. We keep food laws because:
β A) We're already holy and maintain it β B) To earn holiness β C) It's optional β D) It was just for Israel
What does "am qadosh" mean? Why does identity come BEFORE instruction?
"For thou art an holy people unto Yahuah thy Elohim..."
Modern science confirms Yahuah's wisdom! Pork carries serious health risks.
Many people say "just cook it thoroughly." But some toxins and diseases survive cooking! Plus, cross-contamination in kitchens is common.
1. Pork tapeworm can cause brain cysts. β True β False
2. Cooking pork properly eliminates ALL risks. β True β False
3. Hepatitis E has been found in U.S. grocery store pork. β True β False
Name 3 diseases associated with pork and one danger each:
Explain to someone the health dangers of pork.
Who I taught:
Shellfish are even more dangerous! They are filter-feeders that concentrate toxins.
Shellfish are filter-feedersβthey pump water through their bodies and filter out particles. This means they concentrate toxins up to 100 times from their environment!
1. Vibrio vulnificus causes what percentage of seafood deaths?
β A) 10% β B) 50% β C) 95% β D) 5%
2. PSP toxins are destroyed by cooking:
β A) True β B) False
Why are shellfish called "abomination"? List 2 reasons why they're dangerous:
"They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, and their carcasses you shall regard as an abomination."
Many people claim the New Testament abolished food laws. Let's examine the key passages!
NO unclean animal is mentioned anywhere in Mark 7! The word used is "artos" (bread). The entire dispute was about ceremonial handwashing traditions.
| Passage | Common Claim | Actual Context |
|---|---|---|
| Mark 7 | "All foods clean" | About handwashing (bread, not pork) |
| Acts 10 | Peter ate unclean | About Gentiles; Peter NEVER ate |
| Romans 14 | Eat anything | Idol-meat controversy |
1. Mark 7 discusses pork and shellfish. β True β False
2. Peter ate the unclean animals in his vision. β True β False
3. Peter interpreted his vision as being about people. β True β False
What was the ACTUAL issue in Mark 7? What did Peter say his vision was about?
Explain to someone what Acts 10 is really about.
Who I taught:
"Elohim has shown me that I should not call any MAN common or unclean."
Let's make this practical! Here's how to apply what you've learned.
Meat: Beef, lamb, goat, venison, bison, buffalo
Poultry: Chicken, turkey, duck, goose, quail
Fish: Salmon, tuna, cod, tilapia, bass, trout, sardines, herring
Pork products: Ham, bacon, sausage, pepperoni, hot dogs (check labels!)
Shellfish: Shrimp, lobster, crab, clams, oysters, mussels, scallops
Other: Catfish, shark, eel, squid, octopus
| Ingredient | What It Is | Found In |
|---|---|---|
| Gelatin | Usually from pig | Jell-O, marshmallows, gummy candy |
| Lard | Pig fat | Baked goods, refried beans |
| Pepsin | Often from pig stomach | Cheese, supplements |
| Carmine | Crushed insects (red dye) | Red-colored food/drinks |
| Instead of... | Try... |
|---|---|
| Bacon | Turkey bacon, beef bacon |
| Pepperoni | Beef pepperoni |
| Ham | Smoked turkey, roast beef |
| Pork sausage | Chicken, turkey, or beef sausage |
Name 3 hidden unclean ingredients and where they're found:
This isn't just about foodβit's about who you ARE!
When you follow Yahuah's dietary instructions, you're declaring:
Daniel refused the king's food and Yahuah blessed him! You can politely decline unclean food too. You don't have to be rudeβjust firm in your convictions.
How did Daniel handle food at the king's court? What can we learn from him?
Explain to someone why following food laws is about identity, not just health.
Who I taught:
Land: Beef, lamb, goat, deer, bison (split hoof + chews cud)
Water: Salmon, tuna, cod, tilapia, bass, trout (fins + scales)
Poultry: Chicken, turkey, duck, quail
Land: Pig, rabbit, horse, camel
