The Seven Churches of Revelation - Historical and Prophetic

Revelation 1:3
"Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand."

About This Study

The Book of Revelation is one of the most fascinating — and most misunderstood — books in the Bible. This study uses the HISTORICIST interpretation, which was believed by virtually all Protestant Reformers like Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Wesley.

This approach understands Revelation's prophecies as being fulfilled throughout history from John's day to the Second Coming.

LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION — WHY HISTORICISM?

RECEIVE — Read and Learn

The Book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John while exiled on the island of Patmos, around 95-96 AD.

Three Ways to Interpret Revelation:

ViewWhat It TeachesProblem
PreterismEverything happened in 70 ADIgnores future events
FuturismEverything is still future2000+ years of no relevance?
HistoricismProphecies unfold through historyRequires historical study

Why the Reformers Chose Historicism

  1. Biblical precedent: Daniel's prophecies span from his time to the end
  2. Day-year principle: Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:6 establish "each day for a year"
  3. Papal identification: The Reformers identified the papacy as the Antichrist system

Key Symbols in Revelation:

SymbolMeaningScripture
BeastKingdom/EmpireDaniel 7:17, 23
Waters/SeaPeoples, nationsRevelation 17:15
Woman (Pure)True Assembly/Church2 Corinthians 11:2

1260 Days = 1260 Years (538-1798 AD)

The woman flees to the wilderness during papal supremacy. Faithful groups like the Waldenses preserved truth during this time.
