"Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy" - Exodus 20:8

Lesson 1: The Sabbath Began at Creation

The Sabbath wasn't just a rule given to Moses thousands of years later. It was created at the very beginning of the world!

"By the seventh day Elohim had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work. Then Elohim blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done."
— Genesis 2:2-3

Three Special Things Elohim Did

Elohim did three things to the seventh day that He did to no other day:

  1. He RESTED on it (the Hebrew word is "shabbat")
  2. He BLESSED it (made it special)
  3. He MADE IT HOLY (set it apart)
Think About This: The Sabbath was created BEFORE sin entered the world and BEFORE Abraham (the first Hebrew) was even born. This means it was made for ALL people, not just the Jewish nation!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Elohim rested on the day.

2. The Sabbath was established at , not at Mount Sinai.

3. The Sabbath was made for all , not just Jews (Mark 2:27).

True or False:

Think About It: Why does it matter that the Sabbath was created before sin entered the world?

Lesson 2: The Manna Miracle

Many people think the Sabbath was first given at Mount Sinai when Moses received the Ten Commandments. But Israel was already keeping the Sabbath BEFORE they got there!

"Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to Yahuah... Yahuah has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day He gives you bread for two days."
— Exodus 16:23, 29

The Weekly Miracle

When Israel was in the wilderness, Yahuah fed them with bread from heaven called manna. But He used it to teach them about the Sabbath:

DayWhat Happened
Days 1-5Gather one portion - it stayed fresh for one day
Day 6Gather double portion - it stayed fresh for two days!
Day 7 (Sabbath)No manna fell - rest and eat what you saved
Amazing! On regular days, leftover manna got worms and smelled terrible. But the manna kept for Sabbath stayed perfectly fresh! Yahuah did a miracle every single week to show that the Sabbath was special.

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. On day six, the Israelites gathered a portion.

2. On the seventh day, no fell from heaven.

3. This happened the Ten Commandments were given.

Lesson 3: The Fourth Commandment

The Sabbath commandment is special - it's the only one that begins with the word "Remember." Why? Because people tend to forget it!

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to Yahuah your Elohim. On it you shall not do any work..."
— Exodus 20:8-10

Who Must Rest?

The command applies to everyone in your household:

Notice: Even foreigners (non-Israelites) living with Israel were commanded to rest. The Sabbath was never meant for just one ethnic group!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. " the Sabbath day by keeping it holy."

2. The seventh day is a sabbath to your Elohim.

3. Even were required to rest on the Sabbath.

True or False:

Lesson 4: The Sabbath Is a Sign

The Sabbath is more than just a day off. It's a "sign" that identifies who belongs to Yahuah!

"The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between Me and the Israelites forever..."
— Exodus 31:16-17

What's a "Sign"?

The Hebrew word is "ot" (אוֹת). It means a marker, a signal, or proof of identity. Think of it like:

Same Word: The rainbow was called an "ot" (sign) of Yahuah's promise to Noah. The blood on the doorposts was an "ot" (sign) for the Passover. The Sabbath is an "ot" showing we are set apart as Yahuah's people.

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The Sabbath is a between Yahuah and His people.

2. The Hebrew word for "sign" is .

3. The covenant is described as (it never ends).

Think About It: If the Sabbath is a "sign" that identifies Yahuah's people, what does it mean when we stop keeping it?

RECALL - Close Your Book!

What is the Hebrew word for "sign" and what does the Sabbath sign represent?

TEACH Someone

Explain to someone why the Sabbath is called an "eternal covenant."

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Exodus 31:13

"My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations."

Lesson 5: Sabbath in the Future

Some people say the Sabbath was only for Old Testament times. But the prophets say it will be kept even in the New Earth!

"If you call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of Yahuah honorable... then you shall delight yourself in Yahuah."
— Isaiah 58:13-14
"For as the new heavens and the new earth... shall remain before Me... from one Sabbath to another, shall ALL FLESH come to worship before Me, says Yahuah."
— Isaiah 66:22-23
Did You Catch That? In the new heavens and new earth (after Yahusha returns), everyone ("all flesh") will still be keeping the Sabbath! If it was going to be done away with, why would we keep it for eternity?

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Isaiah 58 says we should call the Sabbath a .

2. In the new heavens and earth, flesh will worship on Sabbath.

3. This means the Sabbath is an practice, not temporary.

True or False:

Lesson 6: Yahusha Kept the Sabbath

Did Yahusha (Jesus) break the Sabbath? Or did He break the man-made traditions ABOUT the Sabbath?

"He went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day He went into the synagogue, as was His custom."
— Luke 4:16
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
— Mark 2:27-28

Tradition vs. Torah

The religious leaders had added 39 extra rules about what counted as "work" on the Sabbath. Yahusha healed people on the Sabbath, which broke their man-made rules - but He never broke Yahuah's actual law!

Important: Sin is breaking the law (1 John 3:4). If Yahusha had broken the real Sabbath command, He would have been a sinner and couldn't have been our perfect sacrifice!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Going to synagogue on Sabbath was Yahusha's .

2. Yahusha declared Himself " of the Sabbath."

3. He broke Pharisaic , not the actual Law of Moses.

True or False:

RECALL - Close Your Book!

How did Yahusha observe the Sabbath? What does "Lord of the Sabbath" mean?

TEACH Someone

Explain the difference between Sabbath law and Pharisaic tradition.

Who did you teach? Date:

Memory Verse: Mark 2:27-28

"The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath."

Lesson 7: The Apostles Kept the Sabbath

Some people claim the apostles changed the day of worship to Sunday after Yahusha rose. But the book of Acts tells a different story!

"As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures."
— Acts 17:2
"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of Elohim."
— Hebrews 4:9

Greek Word Study

The word in Hebrews 4:9 is "sabbatismos" (σαββατισμός). It literally means "a keeping of the Sabbath." It's different from the general word for rest!

Did You Know? In Acts 13:42-44, when Paul finished preaching, the GENTILES (non-Jews) asked him to come back the NEXT SABBATH - and he did! He didn't say "Come tomorrow on Sunday" - he came on the Sabbath.

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Sabbath synagogue attendance was Paul's .

2. Hebrews 4:9 uses the Greek word .

3. This word means "a of the Sabbath."

Lesson 8: Who Changed the Sabbath?

If the Bible didn't change the Sabbath, who did? History gives us a clear answer.

Constantine's Sunday Law (321 AD)

"On the venerable Day of the Sun let all judges, city people and craftsmen rest." - Emperor Constantine's Law

Council of Laodicea (c. 364 AD)

"Christians must not Judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day... But if any shall be found to be Judaizers, let them be anathema [cursed]." - Canon 29

Honest Admission: "You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday." - James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers, 1917 (Catholic source)

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Constantine's Sunday law was issued in AD.

2. He called Sunday "the venerable day of the ."

3. The Council of Laodicea said Christians must not "" by keeping Sabbath.

Lesson 9: We Haven't Lost the Day

A common objection: "The calendar has changed, so we don't know which day is really the seventh!" Is this true?

The Weekly Cycle Has Never Changed

While calendars have been adjusted (like switching from Julian to Gregorian in 1582), the seven-day weekly cycle has NEVER been broken in recorded history.

The 1582 Change: When the calendar changed, Thursday, October 4th was followed by Friday, October 15th. Yes, they skipped 10 DATES - but the DAYS of the week (Thursday → Friday) continued without any interruption!

The Jewish Witness

Jews have been scattered to every nation on earth for 2,000 years. Yet Jews in China, Europe, Africa, and America ALL agree on which day is the Sabbath. If the day had been lost, different communities would be keeping different days!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The 1582 calendar change skipped , not days of the week.

2. Jews have kept the same seventh day.

3. Modern is the biblical seventh day.

True or False:

RECALL - Close Your Book!

What proofs exist that the weekly cycle has not been lost?

TEACH Someone

Explain why we can still identify the seventh day today.

Lesson 10: How to Keep the Sabbath

Now that we understand WHY to keep the Sabbath, let's learn HOW!

When Does It Start?

The biblical day begins at sunset (Genesis 1: "evening and morning"). So the Sabbath runs from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.

Preparation Day

Friday is the "preparation day." Use it to cook, clean, and get ready so you can fully rest on Sabbath.

What Should You Do?

Make It Special: Isaiah says to call the Sabbath a "delight" - that means it should be something you look forward to, not something you dread!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The Sabbath begins at on Friday.

2. The Sabbath ends at on Saturday.

3. Isaiah 58 says to call the Sabbath a .

Plan Your Sabbath: What are three things you can do to make the Sabbath special for your family?

RECALL - Close Your Book!
