Lesson 1: Why Names Matter

Imagine if your best friend never used your name - just called you "Hey, you!" Names are personal. Names create relationship.

"This is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."
— Exodus 3:15

More Than Just a Label

In the Bible, names weren't just labels - they revealed character, destiny, and identity. When parents named a child, they were often declaring something about that child's future!

The Hebrew word for "name" is shem (שֵׁם). It means more than just a word to call someone. It includes:

Did You Know? The Creator's personal name (YHWH) appears about 6,828 times in the Hebrew Bible! But most English Bibles replace it with "LORD" in capital letters. That means every time you see "LORD" in capitals, it's actually hiding His real name!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The Hebrew word for "name" is .

2. The divine name YHWH appears about times in the Hebrew Bible.

3. Most English Bibles replace YHWH with "" in capital letters.

Lesson 2: The Four-Letter Name

When Moses asked the Creator for His name, He received the most powerful answer in history!

"And Elohim said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."
— Exodus 3:14

The Tetragrammaton

The divine name is made up of four Hebrew letters (reading right to left):

י ה ו ה
Yod - Hey - Waw - Hey
Y - H - W - H

The word "Tetragrammaton" is Greek for "four letters" - that's what scholars call this name!

Hebrew LetterNameSound
יYodY (like "yes")
הHeyH (like "hay")
וWawW (like "wow")
הHeyH (like "hay")
What Does It Mean? The name YHWH is connected to the Hebrew word "to be" (hayah). When Yahuah said "I AM WHO I AM," He was revealing that He is the eternal, self-existing One - He always was, He is, and He always will be!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The divine name has Hebrew letters.

2. "Tetragrammaton" is Greek for " letters."

3. The name is connected to the Hebrew word meaning "to ".

Lesson 3: How Do We Pronounce It?

If the name is written YHWH, how do we actually say it?

"Sing unto Elohim, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name YAH, and rejoice before him."
— Psalm 68:4

Two Main Options

Scholars have studied this for centuries. Here are the two most common pronunciations:

PronunciationEvidence
YahwehGreek writings from early church fathers spelled it similar to this. Most modern scholars prefer this.
YahuahHebrew names ending in "-yahu" (like Eliyahu, Isaiah) suggest "Yahu" was part of the name.

What About "Jehovah"?

"Jehovah" is actually a mistake! Here's what happened:

The Short Form: We DO know the short form for sure: YAH (יָהּ). It appears in "HalleluYah" (Praise Yah!) and in many Hebrew names like EliYah (Elijah).

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The two main pronunciations are Yahweh and .

2. "Jehovah" is a of YHWH consonants and Adonai vowels.

Lesson 4: Why Was the Name Hidden?

If the name appears over 6,800 times in Scripture, why don't most people know it?

"The prophets... cause my people to forget my name."
— Jeremiah 23:27

A Brief History

WhenWhat Happened
~3rd Century BCEJewish leaders stopped speaking the name out loud, thinking it was too holy
~3rd Century BCEThe Greek translation (Septuagint) replaced YHWH with "Kyrios" (Lord)
Middle AgesEnglish Bibles followed this tradition, using "LORD" for YHWH
Think About This: Why would Yahuah give us His name 6,828 times if He didn't want us to know it? He said it was His memorial "unto all generations" - that includes us!

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. Jewish leaders stopped speaking the name around the century BCE.

2. The Greek translation replaced YHWH with "" (Lord).

3. Jeremiah warned that prophets would cause people to the name.

Lesson 5: The Messiah's Hebrew Name

Just like the Father has a Hebrew name, so does the Son!

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name YESHUA: for he shall save his people from their sins."
— Matthew 1:21 (with Hebrew restored)

What Was His Name?

The Messiah was Jewish, lived in Israel, and spoke Hebrew and Aramaic. His name was Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ), which is a short form of Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ) - the same name as Joshua in the Old Testament!

The Name Has Meaning! Yeshua/Yehoshua means "Yah is salvation" or "Yahuah saves." That's why Matthew 1:21 says he was named this "for he shall SAVE his people" - the name literally means salvation!

From Hebrew to English

HebrewGreekLatinEnglish

Greek doesn't have a "sh" sound, so "Yeshua" became "Iesous." The letter J wasn't invented until the 1500s!

Lesson 6: Names That Carry the Divine Name

Many people in the Bible had names that included Yahuah's name! These are called "theophoric" names.

"The name of the Elohim of Israel was EliYahu."
— 1 Kings 18:36 (with Hebrew restored)

Can You Spot the Divine Name?

Hebrew NameEnglish VersionMeaning

YirmeYahuJeremiah"Yahu will exalt"
NetanYahNethaniah"Yah has given"

Lesson 7: Titles vs. Names

What's the difference between a name and a title? "President" is a title - it could refer to many people. But "Abraham Lincoln" is a name - it refers to one specific person.

"I am YHWH: that is my name."
— Isaiah 42:8

Common Biblical Titles

Lesson 8: Debunking False Claims

Sometimes people make claims about word origins that aren't actually true. Let's look at some common ones.

"The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge."
— Proverbs 18:15
Common Claim: "The word 'God' comes from a pagan deity named Gad!"
The Facts: The English word "God" comes from the Proto-Germanic word "guthan" meaning "that which is invoked" - it has NO connection to the Hebrew word "Gad" (גָּד, fortune/luck).
Common Claim: "Jesus is really Zeus!"
The Facts: "Jesus" comes from the Greek "Iesous," which translates the Hebrew "Yeshua." The word "Zeus" comes from a completely different Greek word. They just sound similar in English.
Be a Truth Detective! Always check claims before believing them. Ask: What's the actual historical evidence? Where did this claim come from? What do language scholars say?

Check Your Understanding

Fill in the Blanks:

1. The English word "God" comes from Proto-Germanic "."
