The Dead Know Nothing

Scripture is direct. Death is unconsciousness, not immediate heaven or hell. The dead are asleep until the resurrection.

Ecclesiastes 9:5
"The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing."
Psalm 146:4
"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."
Daniel 12:2
"And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."
John 11:11
"Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep."

Destruction Language Throughout Scripture

Every passage about the fate of the wicked uses destruction language. Not eternal torment. Destruction.

Matthew 10:28
"Fear Him which is able to DESTROY both soul and body in Gehenna."
Greek: apollumi = to destroy utterly, to perish completely. Not "torment forever."
2 Thessalonians 1:9
"Punished with everlasting DESTRUCTION."
John 3:16
"Should not PERISH but have everlasting life."
The opposite of eternal life is perishing, not eternal life in torment.
Romans 6:23
"The wages of sin is DEATH."
Not eternal torment. Death.
Malachi 4:1-3
"They shall be ASHES under the soles of your feet."
Obadiah 1:16
"They shall be as though they had NOT BEEN."
Psalm 37:20
"The wicked shall perish... into smoke shall they consume away."
Revelation 20:14
"This is the second DEATH."
Called death, not second life. Not eternal conscious torment.

Only Yahuah Has Immortality

"Who ONLY hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto." 1 Timothy 6:16

Eternal life is a GIFT for believers (Romans 6:23), not an inherent quality of all souls. The wicked do not have immortal souls that can be tortured forever.

The Logic Test

If everyone lives forever, whether in heaven or in hell, then eternal life is not a gift. It is universal. Everyone already has it. That contradicts John 3:16, which says eternal life is given specifically to those who believe, so they will not perish.

"Eternal Fire" = Eternal Results

The word "eternal" describes the RESULT of the fire, not the duration of the burning process. Scripture proves this with examples.

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them... are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." Jude 1:7

Sodom suffered "eternal fire." Is Sodom still burning? No. The fire did its job. The RESULT is permanent.

"It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever." Isaiah 34:10 (about Edom)

Edom is not still burning. The destruction was complete and permanent.

The Hebrew word olam and Greek aionios mean "age-lasting" or "until completion," not necessarily infinite duration. Jonah was in the whale "forever" (olam). That was 3 days.

"The Worm Dieth Not"

"And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched." Isaiah 66:24

The Hebrew word for "carcases" is pegar, meaning dead bodies. Corpses. Not living souls screaming in agony. Worms consume DEAD BODIES. You cannot torture a corpse. The fire burns until the corpses are completely consumed. That is the imagery.

"No Rest Day or Night"

"And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image." Revelation 14:11

This describes those in the beast system RIGHT NOW. No Sabbath. No peace. Working seven days. Chasing the system endlessly. Never satisfied. Never still.

Yahuah offered rest. The Sabbath. They rejected it. Now they have no rest day or night.

"There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of Yahuah. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works." Hebrews 4:9-10

The torment of serving the beast is a present condition, not just a future sentence.

The Death Sequence in Revelation 20

The Revelation 20 sequence reveals the order of events at final judgment.

Revelation 20:10
The devil thrown in lake of fire. Tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:14
Death and Hades cast into the lake. "This is the second death."
Revelation 20:15
Those not in the Book of Life cast in.

An Honest Tension

Death itself is destroyed BEFORE the wicked are cast in. This creates a genuine tension with pure annihilationism. If death no longer functions, what happens to those cast in after death is destroyed?

Possible reconciliation: The devil, beast, and false prophet receive eternal torment specifically (named entities, verse 10). General sinners experience the second death as destruction (verse 14). The "for ever and ever" language is only applied to specific entities, not universally to all the wicked.

Where Eternal Torment Came From

The eternal torment doctrine does not come from Scripture. It comes from Greek philosophy. Plato taught the immortality of the soul. This concept was absorbed into church theology during the early centuries when pagan converts brought their philosophical frameworks into the faith.

Scripture itself says the wicked are burned up and gone. Ashes. Consumed. As though they had not been. The punishment is eternal in that it is permanent and irreversible. Not eternal in duration of suffering.

Consider the Character of Yahuah

Would a loving Father torture His children for eternity for 70 years of sin? Infinite punishment for finite transgression? That is not justice. That is sadism. And it contradicts every verse about destruction, perishing, death, ashes, and ceasing to exist that fills the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation.

The Truth Sets You Free

Fear-based theology keeps people in bondage. The truth of Scripture reveals a just Creator who offers eternal life as a gift and whose punishment for the wicked is permanent destruction, not infinite cruelty.
