MAY 19, 1780: THE DARK DAY

When the Sun Became Black as Sackcloth

"And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood" - Revelation 6:12

The Sixth Seal Prophecy

Revelation 6:12-13: "And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind."

This prophecy describes three specific signs:

  1. Great Earthquake: Fulfilled November 1, 1755 (Lisbon Earthquake)
  2. Sun Black/Moon Blood: Fulfilled May 19, 1780 (The Dark Day)
  3. Stars Falling: Fulfilled November 13, 1833 (Leonid Meteor Storm)

These three events happened in the exact sequence prophesied, marking the approach of the end times.

The Historic Dark Day

May 19, 1780 - New England

At 10:00 AM the sun was blotted out

By noon, total darkness required candles

That night, the moon appeared blood red

The Inexplicable Darkness:

  • Began around 10 AM and lasted until midnight
  • Covered all of New England and parts of Canada
  • So dark that candles were needed at noon
  • Animals returned to their roosts and stalls
  • People couldn't read without artificial light
  • The darkness had a supernatural quality - not like an eclipse

Contemporary Accounts:

Dr. Samuel Williams (Harvard): "The birds having sung their evening songs, disappeared, and became silent... The fowls retired to roost... The cattle at the pastures came home... and in short, there was the appearance of midnight."

Eyewitness Accounts

Judge Abraham Davenport - Connecticut Legislature:

When fellow legislators wanted to adjourn, believing it was the Day of Judgment, Davenport famously said:

"I am against adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching, or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought."

Rev. Elam Potter - Written Account:

"About 11 o'clock the darkness was such as to demand our attention... The darkness increased and by noon we were obliged to light candles to dine by. The birds sang their evening songs and disappeared. The barn fowls went to their roosts."

Timothy Dwight (President of Yale):

"The 19th of May, 1780, was a remarkable dark day. Candles were lighted in many houses; the birds were silent and disappeared; and the fowls retired to roost... A very general opinion prevailed, that the day of judgment was at hand."

The Moon Became as Blood

Joel 2:31: "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of YHWH come."

That Night - May 19-20, 1780:

  • Though it was nearly full moon, complete darkness until 1 AM
  • When the moon finally appeared, it was blood red
  • Witnesses described it as having "the appearance of blood"
  • The redness wasn't from eclipse - no eclipse was possible that night

Milo Bostwick's Account:

"The moon which was at its full, had the appearance of blood."

Stone's History of Beverly:

"The darkness of the following evening was probably as gross as ever has been observed since the Almighty fiat gave birth to light... The moon, though at the full, gave no light, appearing like blood."

No Natural Explanation

What Scientists Have Ruled Out:

  • NOT an Eclipse: No solar eclipse occurred on May 19, 1780
  • NOT Volcanic: No major eruptions at that time
  • NOT Normal Smoke: Forest fires don't create such darkness
  • NOT Weather: No storms could explain the phenomenon

Modern Scientific Analysis:

In 2007, researchers suggested forest fires combined with fog, but this doesn't explain:

  • The supernatural quality of the darkness
  • The blood-red moon that night
  • The exact fulfillment of prophecy
  • The widespread religious conviction it inspired

The event remains unexplained by natural causes - exactly as a supernatural sign should be!

Part of the End-Time Sequence

The Three Signs of the Sixth Seal:

1. November 1, 1755: Lisbon Earthquake - Most destructive in history

2. May 19, 1780: The Dark Day - Sun black, moon blood

3. November 13, 1833: Stars Fall - Greatest meteor shower in history

Matthew 24:29: "Yahusha said: Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven..."

Note: "After the tribulation" = After the 1,260 years of papal persecution (538-1798). The Dark Day occurred in 1780, exactly in this timeframe!

The Religious Awakening

Immediate Impact:

  • Churches filled with people believing Judgment Day had come
  • Many confessed sins and sought forgiveness
  • Led to the Second Great Awakening in America
  • Sparked intense Bible study about end-time prophecies

Noah Webster (Dictionary Author):

"So intense was the darkness that people were actually frightened, believing the Day of Judgment had come... People in the fields left their work and hurried home, while others rushed to their neighbors to confess wrongs and ask forgiveness."

Why 1780 Matters for Us

The Timeline Progression:

1755 (Earthquake) → 1780 (Dark Day) → 1833 (Stars Fall)

1947 (Israel Restored) → 2027 (Generation Ends)

Key Lessons:

  1. Literal Fulfillment: Prophecies are fulfilled exactly as written
  2. Divine Timing: Events occur in Yahuah's perfect sequence
  3. Clear Signs: No natural explanation - obviously supernatural
  4. Wake-Up Call: These signs call people to prepare

Luke 21:25-28: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars... And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."
